Result Clauses The lesson was sooooo interesting that everyone learned result clauses
What is a Result Clause? • A result clause is a subordinate clause that shows the result of the action of the main clause.
How do I recognize them? • Result Clauses are so easy to recognize that all the students can find them. • 3 things for which to look: • Subordinate clause with a verb in the subjunctive • All begin with ut (negatives also have a negative word: non, nihil, numquam, nemo, nullus) • Main clause has an adjective or adverb which indicates degree
Um, which adjectives and adverbs are those, exactly? ita (so) tam (so) sic (so) adeo (so much, so greatly) tot (so many) tantus-a-um (so great, so much) If you translate it with “so” and it has an ut. . .it’s probably a result clause
How do I translate them? • “that” • Imperfect subjunctives can be either “was/were” or a simple past tense (“-ed”)
Exempla Strythioerat tam stultusutportamcarcerisaperiret. Strythio was so stupid that he opened the prison’s gate. Agricola tot militeshabebatutomnesBritanni se timerent. Agricola had so many soldiers that all the Brits feared him. tantuseratventerModestiutequuseumtenere non posset. So great was Modestus’ stomach that the horse was not able to hold him.
plus exempla Quintus adeo celeriter currebat ut paene antea Salvium adveniret. Quintus was running so quickly that he almost arrived before Salvius. Salvius erat tam malus ut nemo se amaret. Salvius was sooo eviiiil that nobody liked him. tua mater erat tam deformis ut . . .
