  2. Carbohydrates • Provides energy • 2 types • Simple(sugars)  fast energy • Complex(starches)  more energy • Pancreas produces insulin, helps sugar enter cells • When process goes fast, feel hunger sooner • Found in grains, fruit, milk, etc....

  3. Fats • Allows brain and nervous system to develop • 3 types • Unsaturated(oils) • Saturated(animal fat) • Trans • Saturated can raise cholesterol levels • Today 600 calories will come from fat • Found in oils, animals, fried foods, etc…

  4. Protein • Maintains tissues • 2 types • Essential • Non-essential • Muscles and immune system made of protein • Mad of strings of amino acids • Amino acids can form many proteins • Found in meat, alternatives, etc…

  5. Fibre • Helps lower blood cholesterol • 2 types • Soluble(dissolves in water) • Insoluble(does not dissolve in water) • Helps bowls • Contains no calories • Found in grains, fruit, vegetables, etc…

  6. Vitamins • Various functions i.e.) helps bones, clot blood • 2 types • Fat-soluble(A,D,E,K) • Water-soluble(C,B) • Fat-soluble stored in fat cells • Water-soluble travels through bloodstream • Found in fruit, vegetables, grains, etc…

  7. Minerals • Various functions i.e.) transport oxygen , maintain muscles • 2 types • Macro • Trace • Need large amounts of macro • Only need small amount of trace • Found in meat, fruit, vegetables, etc…

  8. Water • Allows body to function properly • Would only survive 2 days without water • Everything you eat or drink contains water • Need around 6-8 glasses a day • Allows blood to carry oxygen to body • Every cell needs water
