  3. 1930s • Depression: An economy with high unemployment, falling income, failing business, decline in production and sales • Farming Depression (1920-1935): Cheap land, over production on wheat, the Dust Bowl

  4. Itinerant/Migrant Workers • Dustbowl in Plains: Drought forced owners off farms • Farmers in California had to hire temporary laborers to harvest crops • Poor mid-western farmers were despised and abused in California

  5. Salinas Valley, California • Farm country • Located in Monterey County: 100 miles south of San Francisco, 10 mi. east of the Pacific Ocean • Salinas River: A river that flows through Soledad and into the Monterey Bay

  6. Plot line • This story is a TRAGEDY with a TRAGIC HERO with a TRAGIC FLAW, a climax and a tragic resolution. • Microcosm: The ranch is a microcosm of the world. The ranch and the characters represent the world and people in general.

  7. George Milton has cared for his mentally slow friend, Lennie Small, since the death of Lennie’s Aunt Clara. They travel together to work a various amount of jobs so that one day they will have enough money to live on their own and be their own bosses. Unfortunately, every time they have a job, Lennie gets into some trouble which forces them to run away. This time, they are running from a town called Weed to a ranch where they can work as ranch hands.
