  3. RhetoricalDevices • “I mean the prevalence of the small Pox among our troops…this fatal pestilence completed our destruction” (J. Adams 685). • We believe that in this part of the letter the rhetorical device of Red Herring is used because John Adams starts his letter speaking about the declaration of independence and finishes it with the same topic. The red herring device was used because John deviated from his main idea when he was talking about the wars in Canada.

  4. Rhetoricaldevices • “Yet through all the gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing light and glory” (J. Adams 686). • The rhetorical device of persuasion is commonly used in these letters. John Adams is using this device to emphasize his thoughts about the declaration of independence because these where hard times during the American Revolution.
