Definition • Skin Cancer is the uncontrollable growth of skin cells. • Skin Cancer was first identified by French physician René Laennec in 1804.
Signs/ Symptoms • Specific examples: Melanoma, Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma • Signs for Melanoma are having large brownish spots on your skin. Mole that changes colors, size, or feel, or dark lesions. • Basal cell carcinoma usually appears as a white pearly bump on your face, ear, or scalp. • Squamous cell carcinoma appears as a flat red nouble, or a flat lesion.
How Long? • Melanoma should be treated as soon as detected, because it is the most deadliest. • Basal cell carcinoma rarely kills people, but should be treated before disfiguration occurs. • Squamous Cell Carcinoma is slow growing, but it is able to kill the patient.
Signs and SymptomsGenetic, hereditary or environmental factors • Skin cancer will most likely develop if you have a family history. • Exposure to the sun and tanning beds greatly increase your chance of skin cancer. • You are more at risk if you have paler skin.
Treatment/ Management • Role of medicine: Funding going toward treatment and cure for skin cancer • Role of family support given: Family support will help …a lot • Management of problem short-term: try to treat the skin cancer you currently have. • Management of problem long-term: make sure that the skin cancer you had, doesn't come back. Go for regular evaluations. • Impact on the individual and family: Some relatives and patient may go into serious depression. Some patients may maintain a positive attitude. • Impact on the family: Some people may be depressed but may remain hopeful for the future
Treatment/Managing the problem If treatment is available, examples and details listed • Skin cancer may be treated by, freezing skin cancer cells, • Excisional surgery the doctor cuts off skin cancer tissue. • Laser therapy a beam of light vaporizes growth. • Mohs surgery Removes growth layer by layer until there is no cancer left used on larger, hard to treat cancer. • Radiation Therapy, • Chemotherapy drugs that kill cancer cells.
Statistics • 68,130 Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma this year. • 8,700 will die from it. • A person diagnosed with skin cancer has an 88 percent chance of living 20 years later.
