  1. RtI Training for Campus Staff By: District RtI Committee

  2. What is RtI? RtIis the practice of meeting the academic and behavioral needs of all students through a variety of services containing the following key elements: • High-quality instruction and scientific research-based tiered interventions aligned with individual student need • Frequent monitoring of student progress to make results-based academic and/or behavioral decisions • Application of student response data to important educational decisions (such as those regarding placement, intervention, curriculum, and instructional goals and methodologies) • RtI is NOT putting a child into Special Education. If the interventions are effective, the student will be making significant gains.

  3. A Visual Tier III – Intensive individual interventions 5% Tier II – Targeted group interventions 15% 80% Tier I - Screening and core instructional interventions

  4. Why do we have RtI? • NCLB • Best practices for kids • Federal compliance • Uniformity across the district

  5. What was the process? • The district committee was formed a year ago. • Each campus was offered the option to provide one representative. • The committee did research and made decisions on negotiables and non-negotiables to build consistency across the district.

  6. Campus RtI Team • Core team consists of: • Campus administrator • Counselor • Instructional Specialist • Referring teacher • Other ad hoc members: • Special education personnel • ESL/bilingual personnel • Dyslexia personnel • Behavior specialist Team meets at least every 3rd week, more often as needed.

  7. Identifying Process • Universal screener • Teacher observations • Educational records • Student Progress

  8. Explanation of TIERS Tier III – Intensive individual interventions 5% Tier II – Targeted group interventions 15% 80% Tier I - Core instructional interventions

  9. TIER I Intervention • Tier I – Core instructional intervention. For ALL students. Should be preventive & proactive. If the first line of instruction is effective, 80% of students will be successful. If less than 80% are successful, this is where we re-teach with instructional adjustments. Interventions at Tier I: differentiation, small groups, tutorials etc. (basic good teaching) Form • Documentation of Tier I Interventions – Quantitative Data Only (from teacher)

  10. TIER I Intervention

  11. Lack of progress in Tier I • Should a student not make progress during the 6 – 9 week intervention, the classroom teacher can refer the student to the RtI committee for possible Tier II intervention. Forms (if needed because progress has not been made) • Information from Educational Records (teacher completes & submits to committee) • Teacher logs parent contact • Parent Information Letter (Circle Tier I level) • Information From Parents (sent home by teacher)

  12. TIER II • Tier II – Supplemental instruction is provided to those who display poor response to the group instructional procedures used in tier I. These services are provided in addition to core instruction and can be developed through a problem solving process or through a standard treatment protocol. Interventions at Tier II: pull-outs, additional instruction by another teacher, small group etc. Forms • Parent Information Letter (circle Tier II level) • Documentation of Tier II Intervention (with quantitative data) • RtI Team Document Checklist (to be completed by team) • RtI Fidelity Checklist (to be completed by team member) • RtI Team Meeting Report

  13. TIER II Intervention

  14. Lack of progress in Tier II • Should the student not progress under tier II interventions, the student should be referred to the RtI committee for possible tier III interventions.

  15. TIER III Tier III – Creates intensive instructional interventions to increase a students rate of progress. More intensive services or interventions can be provided for students not making satisfactory progress in the classroom. Interventions at Tier III: will likely include longer term interventions and participation in specific instructional programs. Forms • Documentation of Tier III Intervention (with quantitative data) • Parent Information Letter (updated with tier III circled) • RtI Fidelity Checklist (to be completed by team member) • RtI Team Meeting Report

  16. TIER III Intervention

  17. Optional Forms • RtI Intervention Follow-Up Log • Classroom Observation Form
