Our Soils CGR 4MI
Who needs good soil? • A lot of people may answer the question of “who needs good soil?” with things like “farmers” or “gardners” but I suggest good soils are critical for all of us and it is inherent on all of us to protect them. That kind of dedication is clear on the I Love Soil site when it says: • Soil is an amazing substance. It is a complex mix of ingredients: minerals, air, water, and organic matter—the countless micro-organisms and the decaying remains of once living things. Soil is made of life and soil makes life. • To the farmer, soil is where crops grow.
To the engineer, soil is a foundation to build. • To the ecologist, soil supports and connects ecosystems. • To the archaeologist, soil holds clues to past cultures. • To craftspeople, like potters, soil provides clay to make things. • To the soil scientist, soil is all of these things. • Soil has been called “the skin of the earth” because it is the thin outermost layer of the Earth’s crust. • Like our own skin, we can’t live without soil. Grains of sand using an electron microscope Sand • Range in size from 1/16mm to 2 mm • Most sand in S. Ontario is eroded limestone from the Niagara Escarpment • Sandy soils are ideal for tobacco, peanuts and market gardening cultivation due to its excellent drainage characteristics. • Erodes easily by wind or rain as water penetrates easily
Clay • Less than 0.002 mm • Very fertile because it holds nutrients very well • Clay hold moisture very well • When wet, gets very sticky and hard to cultivate • Excellent for growing grasses
Loams • A mixture of both sand, silt, clay and organic matter • Can be sandy loam, clay loam, etc • the best kind of soil for plants as they drain well and allow for air movement yet hold nutrients
The Great Bean Grow Off • We have 2 types of soil and 4 types organic matter • 1. Clay Loam • 2. Sandy Loam • 3. Composted maple leaves • 4. Composted chicken manure = nitrogen • 5. Composted mulch • 6. Mulch
Give your beans a name and put your names on the side of the pot • In groups of 4 you must fill your pot with a mixture of organic matters and soil • It is up to your group to select and record the type and amount of each soil or material • You will be given 3 bean seeds to plant 3 cm into your soil mixtures • May the best soil produce the best beans for us to eat
