Church Discipline Is the church responsible? Who are the subjects for discipline? What manner of action should be taken? What is to be done after the withdrawal is made? GOD HAS: A plan of salvation for the alien sinner A plan of discipline for the erring brother
Is the Church Obligated to Practice Discipline? • Church in Corinth was (1 Cor. 5:1-13) • Discipline is God’s way of urging the fallen to repent. • It is also how God protects the church from their influence. • Church in Pergamum was (Rev. 2:12-17) • Had to repent of fellowshipping those who held false doctrine. • Church at Rome was (Rom. 16:17-18) • Cause division & stumbling. • Can beguile the innocent. • Jesus said it was (Mt. 18:15-17) • Third time warned & not repent, treated them as heathen & publicans. Sin cannot be overlooked. As soon as it is known it must be dealt with
Who Are the Subjects For Discipline? • The disorderly 2 Thessalonians 3:6 • Those who will not work 2 Thessalonians 3:11 • The busybodies 2 Thessalonians 3:11 • The divisive / factious Titus 3:10 • Those contrary to the doctrine Romans 16:17 • Those who do not abide in the doctrine 2 John 9-11 • The fornicator 1 Corinthians 5:11 • The covetous 1 Corinthians 5:11 • The idolater 1 Corinthians 5:11 • The reviler 1 Corinthians 5:11 • The drunkard 1 Corinthians 5:11 • The extortioner 1 Corinthians 5:11 Who are the subjects for discipline? All who sin and WILL NOT repent!
What Manner of Action Should Be Taken? • All action should begin in hope of restoration • Galatians 6:1-2; 2 Timothy 2:24-26 • Private matters should be dealt with privately first • Matthew 18:15-16 • Public matters should be handled by the church • Matt. 18:17; 1 Corinthians 5:4 • If unrepentant, then the brother must be marked / identified • Rom 16:17; 2 Thes 3:14; 1 Tim 1:19-20 A public announcement should be made so that there is no misunderstanding as to what the church is doing
What is to be Done After Withdrawal is Made? • Note who they are(Rom 16:17; 2 Thes 3:14; Phil 3:17-19) • Do not keep company with (2 Thes 3:14; 1 Cor 5:11) • Do not eat with (1 Cor 5:11) • Do not receive into your house (2 Jn 10) • Do not bid God speed (2 John 10-11) • Count as heathen & publican (Mt 18:17) • Avoid (Rom 16:17; 1 Tim 6:5; 2 Tim 3:5) • Reject (Titus 3:10) • Count not as an enemy but admonish as a brother (2 Thes 3:15) God says this is the best way of restoring those who refuse to repent! Will we refuse to listen to Him?
IF the Scriptural Procedures are Carefully Administered it WILL Accomplish Good! “When I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' and you give himno warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way,to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.” (Ezek. 3:18) • Not every sinner will repent anyway; but it is their best chance & it frees us from their blood. • Thus, let no one say that discipline will do no good and let no one be opposed to it & hinder God’s will.
Who Believes In Christ? “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved…” (Mark 16:16). “He that believeth and is saved may be baptized” (Denominations). He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. (John 12:48)
