  1. NC COUNTDOWN TO COLLEGE Entire month of OCTOBER

Parents have discussions with your seniors Benefits of going to college • 2 year or 4 year or 2 yr then transfer • Public vs Private vs Out of State Where to apply? • We encourage students to apply to 2-4 colleges • Ideally 1 reach, 2 target and 1 safety school Discuss costs of going to college-resources available Discuss ACT and SAT scores

  3. DO I NEED TO RETAKE ACT OR SAT? Is your ACT score close to the admissions average for the university you want to go to? If not, then yes you need to retake. When is up to you…. SAT November 3, 2018 -registration deadline October 5th ACT December 8, 2018- registration deadline November 2nd

  4. STEP 1: CFNC & RDS Students create a login to CFNC if they do not already have one. RDS- Residency Determination Service • Must complete if going to a NC college • This will determine if you are eligible to receive in-state tuition • Uses similar information to FAFSA • When a student completes RDS, they receive a Residency Certification Number (RCN) • The RCN is used by all NC schools to access the student’s residency status. • Some schools (NC Community Colleges) require an RCN to be submitted before they will accept an admissions application.

STEP 2: FAFSA The student and one parent will need a FSA ID in order to sign the FAFSA. • Make sure to choose the correct year-the year you will enter college 2019-2020 • Use the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) if possible to link income information to your FAFSA. • If entering college in 2019, use 2017 tax information • After FAFSA submission, watch for an email with the Student Aid Report (SAR). Keep a digital copy of your SAR.

STEP 3: COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Multiple ways to apply- commonapp.org, cfnc, or a specific school website Apply by Early Action deadlines when possible October 15- 19 College Application Week • Some NC colleges waive application fees during this week • https://nccountdowntocollege.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/nc-college-application-fees-for-c2c-2018.pdf • Each 12th grade student will be offered time slot to complete a college application task in computer lab

  7. Need-Based Fee Waivers If your student qualifies for free or reduced lunch please come talk to me about testing and college application waivers
