D.JOHN 5:1-9 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”  7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” 8Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

THE THIRD SIGN • First and Second Signs • John’s Purpose • Signs and Belief (20:30-31) • “those who believe without seeing are blessed,” (20:29) • Isa 35:5-6 • 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened    and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer,    and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness    and streams in the desert. • The Great Healing to Come • Matthew 8:17 • 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: •    “He took up our infirmities    and bore our diseases.”

THE THIRD SIGN • Isaiah 53 • 4 Surely he took up our pain    and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God,    stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,    he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him,    and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,    each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him    the iniquity of us all. • 7 He was oppressed and afflicted,    yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,    so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away.    Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living;    for the transgression of my people he was punished.[b]9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,    and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence,    nor was any deceit in his mouth. • 10 Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,    and though the LORD makes[c] his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days,    and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. 11 After he has suffered,    he will see the light of life[d] and be satisfied[e]; by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant will justify many,    and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g]   and he will divide the spoils with the strong,[h]because he poured out his life unto death,    and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many,    and made intercession for the transgressors.

THE EXPERTS • “This is the Sabbath!” (5:10) • Instead of engaging in a Rabbinical debate defining ‘work,’ Jesus tells them He is working as God is working. • They placed Religious tradition above Love and Compassion (5:16) • 18 “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” (Lev 19:18) • Scripture is about Jesus • “You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, yet they testify about Me.” (5:39) • Jesus claimed equality to God (5:16-18)

  22. C. HE GOT UP • The Essential Sign: He was lifted up. • “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life,” (3:14) • The Importance: • 1 Cor 15:14 • 1 Cor 15:18-19

HE GOT UP • Four Facts • Fact 1: After His Crucifixion, Jesus was buried by Joseph of Arimathea in a tomb. • Fact 2: On the Sunday after the crucifixion, Jesus’ tomb was found empty by a group of His women followers. • Fact 3: On multiple occasions, and under various circumstances, different individuals and groups saw Jesus alive after His death. • Fact 4: The original disciples suddenly and sincerely came to believe Jesus was risen from the dead, despite having every reason to the contrary.
