Dr. William Glasser • Dr. Glasser is a psychologist and a psychiatrist by trade. • His theories relate to education, counseling, and the business world. • For a complete biography, click here.
Choice Theory • Almost all behavior is chosen. • We are driven to satisfy five basic needs: Freedom Love and Belonging Fun Power Survival
Choice Theory Continued... • Choice theory replaces external control psychology (i.e. Skinner’s philosophy that describes most teachers.) • Dr. Glasser describes Ten Axioms of Choice Theory.
Quality Schools • What are the characteristics of a quality school? • Bennett High School has worked to become the perfect model of a quality school.
Reality Therapy • Defined as a method of counseling and/or problem-solving. • Key components: 1. Take an honest look at both what they want and what they are doing to get what they want. 2. Evaluate the effectiveness of what they are doing. 3. Use this self-evaluation as a springboard for positive personal change.
Lead Management • Change in paradigm from a boss-management approach. • Lead managers continue to focus on “the system.” • Lead managers persuade workers/students to continually upgrade the system by communicating and building trust.
Relating to Little People • Class compact • Define roles of student and teacher • Guide students through a self-evaluation of their own learning • Class meetings
I Ponder... • Marvelous theories! I whole-heartedly agree! • Provides concepts that families can follow. • Small steps can be taken in my own class. • Requires a major change in thinking for teachers--no more fancy pencils, homework coupons or glow-in-the-dark stickers! • How difficult is it to bring along other staff members or parents?
