The American Red Cross of Massachusetts offers The Pillowcase Project, a free preparedness education program for kids aged 8-11. This program teaches children how to be prepared for emergencies and develop coping skills. Based on three steps - learn, practice, and share - it covers home fire preparedness, large-scale emergency preparedness, coping skills for emergency situations, and personal preparedness using a pillowcase kit. The goal is to create a generation of children who understand hazards, take action to prepare for emergencies, and help create a prepared community.

The Pillowcase Project is a free preparedness education program to teach kids ages 8-11 (Grades 3-5) about how to be prepared for emergencies as well as coping skills. This program was originally created by the American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter and implemented in New Orleans schools following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
In 2013 The Walt Disney Company funded the design and development of a multi-year effort to build on this success by creating a standardized, state-of-the-art preparedness education program.
This preparedness education program is based on three steps: Learn, Practice, Share In this program, we teach students about: • Home fire preparedness • Large-scale emergency preparedness (customized to local hazards) • Coping skills for emergency situations • Home preparedness and personal preparedness (Pillowcase kit) • Students are given their own My Preparedness Workbook
Our Vision is to create a generation of children who understand the science of hazards, are empowered to take action by practicing how to prepare for emergencies, and understand that by sharing what they have learned with family and friends, they can help create a prepared community. We will prepare children by using The Pillowcase Project.
