  4. Some Basic Reminders • Search the library catalog to find books, periodical titles, government documents, and multimedia items in the library collection • Use the library’s Useful Websites page to find helpful web resources organized according to subject

  6. Statistical Universe What is it? Online collection of thousands of statistical charts and tables derived from federal and state government agencies, international bodies, and private organizations

Finding Newspaper Articles MAJOR NEWSPAPER DATABASES Available on McDermott Library’s website (www.utdallas.edu/library/collections/dbases.htm ) or from off campus at (http://libproxy.utdallas.edu) • New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal---Archives • Available online back to their inceptions • PDF Full text articles • Photographs, cartoons, maps, illustrations, etc. • Marriage/birth notices, obituaries, stock quotes, ads, etc.

Newspaper Databases continued • Newspapers From TexShare • Contains U.S. and international newspapers • Coverage begins c. 1996 (different dates for each newspaper) • Can search up to 10 newspapers at once (use the “Browse” feature) • Does not index obituaries, sports scores, classified ads, etc. • Especially useful for searching Texas legislative information (Austin-American Statesman and Houston Chronicle)

Newspaper Databases Continued • LEXIS-NEXIS ACADEMIC UNIVERSE • Selected coverage of hundreds of international, national, and regional newspapers and news magazines • Coverage begins c. 1985 (different dates for each newspaper) • Search 5 newpapers at once (click “Source List”) • No photographs, editorial cartoons, obituaries, stock quotes, etc. • Especially useful for searching international newspapers

OTHER NEWSPAPER DATABASES • The Times (London) Online Archive (1800-1870) • Newspaper Source Database • Partial coverage (with selected full text) from 200+ newspapers, 1997 to present • Contains full-text television news transcripts from CBS, Fox, NPR, etc. • Dallas Morning News • Online Archive covers 1924 – 1977; full text with pictures, ads, obituaries, etc. • Recent online coverage, 1984 – present; gap (1978-1983) supplemented by microfilm

  12. Tricks of the Trade • Most newspaper databases do not provide cover-to-cover full-text articles. • Many newspapers do not have complete online indexes.

PowerSearch By EBSCO • Search any combination of 50 databases produced by EBSCO at one time. • Limit by language, date, type of publication, etc. • Includes some full text • Available on McDermott Library’s website (www.utdallas.edu/library/collections/dbases.htm ) or from off campus at (http://libproxy.utdallas.edu)

  14. Tricks of the Trade • Use truncation (*) for word variants to broaden search. • Use quotation marks around phrases. • Do not limit search to full text. If there are no full text links, check the library’s catalog---the articles may be available electronically on another database. • Use Interlibrary Loan for items we do not own www.utdallas.edu/library/howto/forms/illforms.htm

  15. Books in Print What is it? Database of books, tapes, and videos available for sale by U.S. publishers who pay to have their wares listed. Useful for finding publishers and prices of books, as well as prepublication info.

  17. Ulrich’s What is it? Collection of both print and online journal titles (incl. defunct). Provides historical publication information, circulation statististics, refereed or trade status, or abstract/index info

  19. Worldcat What is it? Catalog records of thousands of libraries worldwide and provides information on millions of books, newspapers, maps, periodicals, government documents, multimedia, etc.
