A Trip to Ancient Egypt Reasons to visit Ancient Egypt: • PYRAMIDS • - The pyramids are mostly found in Western Egypt, in the Sahara Desert. • The pyramid of Khufu is the largest Egyptian pyramid and is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence. • The number of workers who built the pyramids ranged from a few thousand to one hundred thousand. • The pyramids were stone temples for Egyptian Kings and Queens called Pharaohs. • PHARAOHS • - Pharaoh means ‘Great House’ and they were the King or Queen of Egypt. • Egypt was split into two halves – Upper Egypt known as the White Crown and Lower Egypt called the Red Crown. King Menes was the ruler in the north and when he conquered the south, Egypt was united and this was the start of Ancient Egypt. • Tutankhamen is the most famous Pharaoh. • The pharaohs were mummified and buried in pyramids when they died.
MUMMIES • A mummy is the body of a person or animal, that has been preserved after death. • The Egyptians believed in the afterlife and used mummification so they • could use their bodies in the next life.- The only organ left in the body was the heart as they believed it was the centre of intelligence and emotion.- As well as the mummies, the Egyptians buried their belongings, such as furniture, games and even food for the journey to the afterlife. • RIVER NILE • The River Nile is the longest river in the world, at 6,670km in length and flows through 5 countries before arriving at the Mediterranean Sea. • Most Ancient Egyptians lived near the River Nile because they could grow crops in the mud after it flooded, they used it for transportation and also provided water (it hardly ever rains). • Hapi was the Nile God. • The Nile is famous for Nile Perch which can grow to more than 6ft long, weighing around 200kg. It is also home to the man eating Nile Crocodile – around 200 people die each year in the jaws of a Nile croc!
