Our Goals • To provide parents with a better understanding of their child’s instructional day • To enhance school-home-school collaboration • Technology integration
A typical day….. • Core instruction in the classroom • Specialized instruction in the classroom or resource room • Additional Related Services per the student’s IEP; e.g., therapies
Partnerships • Regular and special educators and therapists • On-going progress review via collaboration/consultation/weekly planning meetings • GLEs (grade level expectations), curriculum, IEP goals and accommodations • Pre-teaching of content vocabulary and skills • Merrimack Special Education Parent Support Group
Reading Skills – the “Big 5” • Phonemic Awareness: K/1st • Phonics and Word Study: K-4th • Fluency: 1st – 4th • Vocabulary: K – 4th (listening, speaking, reading, writing) • Comprehension: K- 4th
Reading Instruction - • Direct instruction/Guided Reading • Skills in isolation then in connected text • Repeated exposure and practice opportunities • Instructional games • Partner reading, choral reading, read alouds • Comprehension strategies
Math Skills • Computation skills • Concepts and applications
Math Instruction • Manipulatives/hands on activities • Practice through games • Cooperative learning through partner and small-group activities
Written Language Skills • Idea development • Sentence development (grammar, punctuation, capitalization) • Paragraph development
Written Language Instruction • Prewriting strategies • Use of graphic organizers • COPS (Capitalization, organization, punctuation, spelling • Reader responses
Behavior and Social Skills Development • Collaborative approach • Social coaching in the natural environment • Focused skill instruction as warranted
