What is science?Science is the study of the ____ ____ Some fields of science:- Biology (study of living things) Geology (study of Earth and all the processes that shape it) Physics/Chemistry (study of non-living matter and energy. Do scientists use the same methods to study biology, geology, physics and chemistry? Why?
  5. Define what a theory is in science. Give examples of theories. A theory is an explanation supported by a large amount of evidence. Examples: Cell theory Plate tectonics theory Continental drift theory Kinetic Theory The Big Bang Theory
  6. What is a scientific Law? A law is a descriptionof a specific relationship under given conditions in the natural world. Examples: Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws of motion The Law of Universal Gravitation Boyle’s Laws of Gases The law of conservation of energy
  7. How do scientific theories differ from laws? Theories Laws Describe the way the world works. (According to Boyle’s Law: At a constant temperature as the pressure of a gas increases its volume decreases.) Explain how things happen. Are supported by a large amount of evidence. (According to the Kinetic Theory of Gases: A gas is composed of quickly moving particles. If the temperatureor the pressure of the gas increases the particles move faster.)
  8. Where do scientists get their evidence? Scientific knowledge is based on empirical evidence. Empirical evidence is all the measurements and data scientists gather in support of a scientific explanation. Empirical evidence can be gathered in the field or in the lab.

  10. How do scientific ideas change? When new evidence becomes available or someone finds a better way of explaining the old evidence. Example: Atomic model 1800’s:- scientists thought atoms were like tiny solid marble- like spheres Later:- atoms contained even smaller parts that carried electric charges Today: - atoms have smaller parts, - some of the parts have electrical charges others do not Example: Pluto
