SDM Long Range Planning Committee MeetingMonday April 4, 2011 -- 12 PM • Professor Carlos Cesnik (AIAA Deputy Director, Structures) chaired the meeting and provided an overview of the SDM Conference committees • SDM Organizing Committee (ORG) – General Chair, Technical Chair, TC Reps, co-located conference and forum chairs • Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) • Strategic Directions Committee (SDC) Document detailing the roles and responsibilities of the committees will be updated; currently working from 2007 version. 52nd SDM Conference Report (Greg Odegard, 2011 Technical Chair) • 629 abstract submittals, 22% to Structures track; 534 general technical papers and 95 student papers • 50% of abstracts received in 10 day deadline extension period following the original abstract deadline • 541 accepted abstracts (83% acceptance rate); 117 accepted Structures abstracts
SDM Long Range Planning Committee MeetingMonday April 4, 2011 -- 12 PM Abstract count – the 629 submittals for 2011 is well below 2010 (750) and the peak year of 2007 (953). There were 461 uploaded manuscripts, with 102 sessions. Parallel sessions were reduced due to the low abstract count. The Sheraton Denver conference site could have accommodated a 100% acceptance rate this year. Rotation of keynote lectures – SDM lecture is always on Monday, but other conferences and forums rotate their keynote lecture time slots. The rotation needs to be clarified. Steve Russell will review previous conference agendas to work out the rotation and schedule 2012 keynotes accordingly. Young Professionals Reception – this event is not held every year, and the time for it is flexible. The Young Professionals Committee will decide whether to have an event in 2012. Should the conference planning committee (ORG) take on this responsibility? Student papers – 87 were originally identified; 17 were either withdrawn or submitted after the 3/14 deadline. There are now 4 student paper awards, and the process for selecting them needs to be definitized.
SDM Long Range Planning Committee MeetingMonday April 4, 2011 -- 12 PM Reminder – all SDM papers must go through the review process, i.e. an extended abstract must be submitted and reviewed, and a full length paper produced following acceptance. 2011 General Chair and Technical Chair – The LRPC expressed its appreciation for the work performed by General Chair Rajiv Naik and Technical Chair Greg Odegard in organizing the 2011 SDM Conference. 2013 SDM Conference (Boston, MA) – Anthony Waas (General Chair) and Ajit Roy (Technical Chair) will lead the 2013 SDM organizing committee. Future SDM Locations – Cathy Chenevey (AIAA) has received proposals from several hotel chains for 3 years of conference accommodation, similar to the current arrangement with Sheraton. Hyatt submitted the most attractive proposal: 2014 Minneapolis, 2015 Bellevue, WA and 2016 Jacksonville or Naples/Ft. Myers, FL Ben Thacker proposed returning to year by year selection, as in the past. The LRPC will resolve this issue within the next 3 to 4 weeks. 2012 SDM Planning – Steve Russell provided a very brief overview.; summary charts were provided to TC reps so they could brief their TCs.
