COTE introduction • Oversee all things related to certification • Past – CBC and Bloodborne Pathogen training, etc. • Here today to talk about process of actually getting licensed. • Obtain license as soon as you can!!!!-regardless of other plans (grad school, Peace Corp, etc). • Only protected against program changes for 1 year • Not protected at all against ISBE changes • Other state certification will likely hinge on Illinois licensure first

Applying for licensure: • Log onto your student portal (www.cote.illinois.edu) • Example: ed-blutarsky (Bluto) • Click on “Licensure Application” • Will ask if your are registered for or previously done student teaching. • If you answer no, Please do not proceed. • Click on “Click here to fill out your application request.” • Email address-Recommend you use your most reliable-regular email account. Don’t use your UIUC account.

  4. Phone number • Degree period • Major • License • Endorsements • May choose as many as you wish to be considered for (but please use some common sense) • Comments: Provide important information regarding endorsements such as pending transfer coursework, tests, etc.

  5. You will all be endorsed in Physical Education (K-12). • To teach any other subject besides PE at the middle grade, you must complete the middle grade coursework and meet the content requirements for the endorsement. • H.S. Health Education endorsement requires 24 hours of coursework, 12 hours at the 300+ level, and pass the ICTS content test in Health Education • Signature (must “sign” stating you understand) (check mark to the side) • Must submit • Once you sign, you can’t go back. Contact us if you need to modify/correct something.

  6. The next day, you should receive an email which says the COTE has received your application. • Can submit application even if you haven’t yet passed all tests (just need to be registered for student teaching). • I will complete an audit based on DARS report (which YOU should also run) or your graduate audit we completed earlier. • Problems? Will either contact you or records officer. If contacted, it’s important you respond.

  7. Nothing missing? Will put application in pending file until end of spring or summer term • Endorsements? Will send Endorsement email to address you put on form. Contact us if something is inaccurate or missing. • End of final semester processing. • EFE hours (at least 80). (Should check Student portal for accuracy) • Student Teaching Time Reports • Be accurate and fairly descriptive. Only record we will have of your Student teaching (directions on student portal).

  8. Safety Training • Mandated Reporter Training acknowledgement • Approved portfolio • Departmental Recommendation • Should come automatically from Kinesiology Deptif you meet all responsibilities • Tests Physical Education Content test Assessment of Professional Teaching • Grades • Degree (must appear on transcripts!!!) • Spring graduates – June, 2013 • This may cause problems with teaching summer school • Summer grads – August, 2013 • This may cause problems with teaching in the fall. Recommending you to ISBE: • We will contact you at email address you provided.

We will provide a link to ISBE website where you will go to claim your license. • Follow steps. • Be prepared to pay by credit card • ISBE will follow up by sending an email with a link where you will go to register your certificate • (District where you have a job or where you live or permanent address) • If you don’t register it, it will lapse so be sure to do this

ISBE will no longer provide paper copy of license • Will need to make a screen shot of license or • Any school district with your name and SSN can verify certification • TESTING (more information) • Two tests: • Content test in Physical Education (144) Must be passed before student teaching • Assessment of Professional Teaching: Grades K-12 (104) • Must be passed before certification • Optional tests • Health Education Endorsement • Foreign Language Endorsements • All high school endorsements • Etc.

  11. Test dates (May Grads) • Latest date for student teaching in the spring-November 16th • May take both tests on the same day • Be sure you request test scores be sent to Illinois • Be sure your SSN is accurate (errors may delay certification). • Keep test scores forever (or longer)- May need them later • Odds and Ends (important trivia)

  12. Renewing your license Important! The window for renewing is getting smaller-don’t let license lapse. • Can renew online through ISBE website (same site you claim your certificate on). • Certification in other states • Likely will require licensure in Illinois first • Other states may have program verification form. • Send form to COTE to fill out. • Contact information is on our website under “Links” in www.cote.illinois.edu • Certification Map • Teacher Certification Offices-addresses, etc. (If you ask us about certification in other states, this is where we’ll likely refer you).

  13. Changes • Certificate is now a “Professional Educator License” • “Types” have gone away (You won’t receive a type-10 license) • Endorsements will be placed on your license. • “Initial”, “standard”, and “Nat’l Board Certification” has gone away • Need to renew every 5 fiscal years. Don’t forget or it will become “lapsed.”
