Typically, an internship there lasts three months. You are paired with a DJ who trains you to be a DJ, and whose show you help run. All interns are also required to work in the café for 5 hours per week, and are put into one of the station’s many ministries (i.e. ). All of this work is volunteer. I spent 8 months at PCR—5 months as an intern and 3 months as a DJ. I worked in café for 7 months and did work for two ministries (Marketing and Breakers). Through all of this work, I gained a variety of different skills. Learning to do a radio show meant learning how to use all the equipment, make playlists, book and interview guests, set up for a performance and more. Working in the ministries was great for time-management and professional communication skills. I can also make lattés. Oh Seven Hundred was a weekly 2-hour radio show that I hosted on Pirate Cat Radio 87.9fm. It aired every Sunday from 7 to 9 AM from June 14th to August 9th, 2009. I conducted interviews and staged live performances with several high school and college-aged musicians, including several Bay School alumni. There were nine episodes, all of which were podcasted (recorded digitally), and they can be heard on my senior project Bay School wiki page. By speaking with musicians young and old, I gained a better understanding of all that goes into professional music. Most of those I interviewed are around my age; I did this because I wanted to look at the beginning of the journey—the challenges that musicians face early in their careers. Age, artistic content, and experience are just some of factors that can limit or create opportunities within the career of a young musician. Another aspect of this project that motivated me was community service. When I was originally coming up with an idea for a radio show, I realized what a privilege it was for a 16-year-old to have his own show at all. I realized that if I can be on the radio, so can others like me. So part of my intention for this project was to give each guest a helping hand with their career by playing their music and voice on air. What is Pirate Cat Radio? Pirate Cat Radio 87.9fm is a community radio station, café, and gallery in the Mission district of San Francisco. The station director, “Monkey,” started PCR almost 14 years ago as an unlicensed (or “pirate”) station. Now, it is run by a team of more than 80 volunteers and features 24/7 programming. It has been broadcasted in Berlin, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and various parts of the Bay Area and southern California and on the internet.
