1. 2013 District PERT Training College and Career Readiness: Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT)

2. Section 1008.30, Florida Statutes • Requires high schools to evaluate college-readiness of students before grade 12 • High schools began to administer the PERT in fall 2011. • Other approved assessments that can be used to demonstrate readiness are ACT, SAT, Accuplacer (CPT) • Students who do not meet college ready scores will be required to complete postsecondary preparatory instruction before high school graduation.

3. College and Career Ready Students are considered college and career ready when they have the knowledge, skills, and academic preparation needed to enroll and succeed in introductory college credit-bearing courses within an associate or baccalaureate degree program without the need for remediation. These same attributes and levels of achievement are needed for entry into and success in postsecondary workforce education or directly into a job that offers gainful employment and career advancement.

4. What is PERT? • PERT is Florida’s common placement test. It is used by all 28 Florida colleges and all public high schools to determine if a student is ready for college credit courses in reading, writing and math. • The PERT has been aligned with the Postsecondary Readiness Competencies (PRCs) identified as necessary for success in entry-level college credit coursework. 4

What are Postsecondary Readiness Competencies? • The Postsecondary Readiness Competencies (PRCs) are skills identified by high school, college and state university faculty as critical to college readiness in mathematics, reading and writing. • PRC’s are true assessments of what students need to know before enrolling in ENC 1101 and MAT 1033

6. PERT Administration Window • PERT testing window starts Oct. 28, 2013 and goes to May 30, 2014 • Tests may be administered during regular school hours, before school and after school but must always be administered by certified school personnel. • (McCann Help Desk is open on Saturdays 9:00-5:00) for schools who want to administer PERT test on Saturdays.

7. Students Required to take PERT • College readiness evaluation is required for 11th grade students who scored: • Levels 2 or 3 on Grade 10 Reading FCAT 2.0 • Levels 2, 3, or 4 in Grade 10 Algebra 1 EOC • Special Diploma students for whom the FCAT is an appropriate assessment • Department of Juvenile Justice students • Charter School students • Full-time public virtual school students .GRADE

PERT Concordant Scores/PERT Math College Ready Score • All students entering grade 9 in the 2011-2012 school year and after must pass the Algebra 1 EOC or attain a comparative score of 97 on the PERT Math for a standard high school diploma. • PERT MATH score 97 does not represent college ready. PERT college ready score is 114 or above.

PERT Test Design • Computer adaptive test (C.A.T.) • Reading, writing and mathematics subtests • 25 operational questions on each subtest plus 5 field test questions • Each test item is aligned with a PRC • Items have been approved and aligned by Florida faculty • Accommodations available based on IEP or 504 Plan (Braille, large print, paper and pencil, and audio versions)

11. Average PERT Testing Times • PERT tests are untimed within one school day. • Administration times are: • Mathematics – 37 minutes • Reading – 1 hour, 3 minutes • Writing – 33 minutes

12. NEW- PERT Retakes • Students may be administered PERT more than once in the same school year if the student did not score college ready on their first attempt. • If the student does not achieve a college ready score on their first PERT attempt in a subject area/areas they are allowed to be administer a PERT Retake test in that subject area/areas but only after there has been sufficient time for remediation. • Contact Student Assessment & Research if a student has taken both attempts at PERT and still have not achieved a college ready score.

13. Student Upload List • List of eligible to students to test has been submitted for upload into College Measured Success. • List of eligible students to test will also be posted to Data-warehouse (DWH Reports Folder) • High Schools will be responsible for managing your own ongoing list of students who test PERT, ACT, SAT, CPT.

PERT Test Units • All schools are allotted a pre-determined number of tests units according to the number of your eligible students to test. • All eligible 11th grade students must be tested first before you can test 12th graders that have not met college readiness. • Each Subject Area of Reading, Math and Writing counts for one test unit each.

16. PERT ACCESS CODES • Scroll down to the bottom of the Dashboard page. There you will find an empty box where you will need to enter the correct Access Code: • Math test = PERTMATH • Reading test = PERTREADING • Writing test = PERTWRITING • Reading &Writing test together = PERTRW • Use these Access Codes for students taking their 2nd attempt at PERT tests: • MATH RETAKE • READINGRETAKE • WRITINGRETAKE

Accommodations for PERT • Computer-Adaptive Test (the primary assessment method) has Accessibility Wizard for personalized screen adjustments • A built-in onscreen calculator appears for specific mathematics items. Hand-held calculators are not allowed. • Only students who have an IEP or 504 plan that authorizes accommodations on standardized tests are eligible for PERT accommodations • Paper version • Large print paper version • Braille version • Audio version • English Language Learners (ELL) with student plans that specify allowable accommodations • Heritage language-to-English or English-to-heritage language dictionary

23. PERT and Dual Enrollment • PERT and Dual Enrollment: Students seeking qualification in a dual enrollment program may be tested only after the primary, targeted group of 11th grade students have been tested.
