  6. 2030: Germany Third largest economy in the world DIW Research Institute (Berlin) • People over 65 will account for half of the population compared with one fifth now • People under 35 will shrink twice as fast as the older population will grow Net result: • Working age population will drop by 25% • Immigration is necessary = diversity • Import 1 million immigrants of working age each year to maintain it workforce

  7. So why do we not do it?

  8. #1 Irrational need for our idea to be the idea • “The slowness of one section of the world about adopting the valuable ideas of another section of the world is a curious thing and unaccountable. This form of stupidity is confined to no community, to no nation; it is universal.”

  9. #2 Brain seeks the easiest way…. Our brain: 2% body mass and requires 20% of our energy Brain is always trying to conserve energy • Comfort zones • Familiar • Closed minded vs. Open minded

  10. #3 Diversity needs support • Assess the situation • Isolate the problem • Formulate the solution • Woo up – get your superiors to approve • Woo laterally – to get your peers to agree • Woo down – to get your direct reports to accept • Implement

  12. Some truths about diversity: • More than one person = diversity • Diversity is not the problem. Close mindedness is the problem • Employee engagement – people want to be acknowledged, valued. • Diversity leads to creativity and innovation.
