About Jerome Smucker Jerome Smucker was born December 5, 1858 in Orrville Ohio. He was a descendent of the Swiss imagrants, and his parents were Ohio Mennonite farmers. Jerome grew up working on the farm and tutoring his neighbors in good penmanship, and he had 7 brothers and sisters.
Starting The Business In 1897, Jerome Smucker constructed a cider mill in Orrville, Ohio, producing apple cider (using a family recipe and some of his extra cider). Jerome began to sale his cider apple butter. In 1900, Jerome and one of his sons, Willard, expanded the business by traveling and selling apple butter from the back of a horse drawn wagon.
In 1921, Jerome had to make a big decision. He had to decide weather to give up is cider mill or begin a new business, now known as the J.M. Smucker Company. Latter in 1939 the J.M. smucker Company began crafting preserves and jellies.
Smucker's Big Step In 1942, Smucker’s became a national distribution. Jerome’s first shipment was from Orrville, Ohio to Los Angeles, California.
