Background – GENSO Global Education Network for Satellite Operations (GENSO) is a software standard which allows each ground station on the network to communicate with non-local spacecraft and transmit data to different ground terminals that have access to the specific satellite. Initially developed by the European Space Agency
Background and Current Status • GENSO Release 1 (R1) has now been released. It was released approximately June 2010. R1 is officially receive only. As of now, R1 has shown the capability to support manual transmissions • GENSO R2 should be transmit and receive • A human has to be at the GSS to push the transmit authorization • Besides Cal Poly and COSMIAC, there are no known GENSO GSS sites in the US • GENSO downloads audio (stored as wav files) and data (packets)
GENSO Network Details *AUS = Authentication Server*GSS = Ground Station Server*MCC = Mission Control Client AUS – Primary in Vigo/Backup planned for Cal Poly to support ELaNA MCC on Laptop MCC with GSS GSS GSS All GSS receive and distribute a piece of the puzzle but only one MCC sees the entire picture. Since the GSS is tied to a physical ground station, it only sees what is available during a pass whereas the MCC has access to the aggregate of all downloaded data. You will see one MCC for each GENSO registered spacecraft when fully functional
Current COSMIAC Ground Station The ground station is the communication link between the satellite, GENSO and other SDR activities. The GENSO system controls the tracking, position, frequency channel and modulation of the system from the internet. 5
Role and Responsibilities of Team Member Subhash: Learning about all the equipments at GS Organizing the system hardware Tracking the satellite Exchanging emails and communicating with other stations Craig: Mentoring
Goal Of The Project Ground Station Function Learning GENSO Tracking and communicating with space Craft Designing and testing Trailblazer I communication system Designing satellite communication interface forTrailblazer II
WHY this is a GOOD Senior Design Project Especially use knowledge gained in signals and communication in school to solve the problem related to Engineering. Gaining real world engineering experience Great teamwork experience
Biggest Challenges and Concerns Mapping entire ground station Being able to communicate with satellite Timing
Task for Upcoming Months November- December Tracking the Michigan Bird. Be able to Communicate with the Satellite January – March Designing and testing Trailblazer I communication system March – May Designing satellite communication interface for TrailblazerII
