Exodus 1:1-7 • The Israelites Oppressed • 1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. 5 The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy[a] in all; Joseph was already in Egypt.  6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, 7 but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.

9. Exodus 2:23-25 • 23 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

11. Old Testament is about Promises • God makes a series of good promises and then keeps them • The story of these promises and all the work God must go through to keep them is the story of the first part of the Bible

12. Promises to Abraham • Genesis 12:1 – 5 big promises • 1. Make you a great nation • 2. Bless you • 3. Make your name great and you will be a blessing • 4. Bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you • 5. All people will be blessed through you

13. Same promise about a vast number of descendants repeated to: • Abraham – at least 5 times • Isaac – Gen 26:4 • Jacob – Gen 28:14, 35:11, 46:3

14. What do you think this means? • And God remembered His promise

15. When the Bible says – God remembered His promise – it means: • He is acting on His promise

16. Exodus is a part of the continued story • Same people who were talked about in Genesis – Abraham’s family – are the main characters in Exodus • Jacob’s family go into Egypt – grandchildren and great – great grandchildren of Abraham

17. Exodus 2:24 • 24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob.
