President Wilson’s Plan for Permanent Peace League of Nations
Treaty of Versailles (ver-sigh) • Treaty = plan for peace • What group did Wilson want to create where countries would solve their problems without fighting? • A League of Nations • How was Germany punished for starting the war? • It had to take the blame for the war. • It had to pay billions of dollars in damages.
United Nations What is it? • An international peace-keeping organization What does it do? • It tries to solve problems between countries to prevent war. http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/worldhistory/leagueofnations/
League of Nations - Structure • What was it? • It was a group of nations whose goal was to keep the peace. • How did it work? • Members of the League of Nations “would meet to solve their problems without fighting” (Pacemaker US History 326).
League of Nations - Sanctions • Nations could solve disputes or problems 3 ways: • Verbal sanctions or penalty : This is like a warning you might get before getting in trouble. You get called out for what you are doing. “Stop doing this or you will get in more trouble.” • Economic or money sanctions: This is like getting grounded or sent to your room. You can’t play with anybody else. Countries don’t trade with countries who disobey. Why would this work? If a country can’t sell what it makes or buy what it needs, it can’t make money. • Physical or military sanctions: This is like getting a physical punishment. If you don’t abide by our rules, we’re going to send in an army to make you obey.
Would you vote to join the League of Nations? Pros Cons The use of sanctions could get us into another war. Nations can’t be trusted not to form secret alliances. The league might become more powerful than the U.S.A. What will happen to our country then? • The league will prevent war. • No more secret alliances—everybody belongs to the same group. • It’s fair. Every country gets to vote on group decisions.
