10. BASIC MODULE MOTORSPOR MEDICINE

11. The aim of the BASIC course is to allow doctors to attend motorsport events with sufficient knowledge and understanding to provide effective medical care without compromising their own safety. • It is expected that all candidates and instructors are familiar with and have read the FIA Institute Medicine in Motorsport Handbook.

12. COMPETENCIES • Doctors attending motorsport events as members of the medical team must have certain COMPETENCIES to function safely and effectively: • Knowledge. • Psychomotor skills. • Non-technical skills.

COMPETENCIES • An understanding and knowledge of basic medical trauma care is expected and may have already been achieved from • Training • Experience • The completion of recognised existing trauma and pre-hospital trauma courses • An additional course taught with the FIA Institute Motorsport Medicine Foundation Course.

36. OBJECTIVES • Airway Problems • recognise airway obstruction, use basic manoeuvres, and simple adjuncts to relieve the problem. • recognise airway obstruction, use basic manoeuvres and supraglottic airway to relieve the problem.

OBJECTIVES • Extrication and Spinal Injury • recognise potential spinal cord damage, exclude other injuries, apply splintage appropriately, use Lear type seat, and identify use of vacuum mattress rather than spinal board. • recognise high spinal cord injury, compromised respiratory function, necessity to splint and ventilate and extricate using KED and collar.
