Second Grade Parent Orientation: What to Expect in 2nd Grade

3. What can my child expect in Second Grade? • Students are given alphabetical grades: A=100-90% B= 89-80% C= 79-75% D= 74-70 F= 69-below • Students must earn a 70% average or above in LA and Math to be promoted to 3rd grade. Their overall average must also be 70% or higher. I will request a conference if your child’s average in any area is a 74 or below.

Reading Expectations • Students must read daily to build fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. • Students must be able to apply a variety of decoding strategies. • Students must self-monitor and correct when comprehension breaks down by using reading strategies proficiently. • Students need to read for prolonged periods of time and be able to retell the text.

6. Writing Expectations • Students must be able to speak and write in complete sentences, using correct grammar and mechanics. • Students must be able to brainstorm ideas, organize thoughts, and speak and write about the topic. • Handwriting will be on the report card as an E, S, N, U

Math Expectations • Students’ success with problem-solving is greatly affected by reading ability. • Students must be able to prolong focus in order to break down multi-step problem and use strategies. • Students must know math facts to 20 effortlessly. • Students need to understand math vocabulary and relate math to everyday situations.

8. Math Fact Fluency • In Second grade, students will be assessed on their fact fluency on a regular basis as required by the TEKS for their grade level. Timed, weekly assessments will be taken and averaged as a daily grade during the first nine weeks. • Beginning in the second nine weeks, the grade will account for ½ of major grade for the remaining nine weeks.

9. Words Their Way • Words Their Way is a spelling program that is based on the development of each student in terms of letter/word/pattern awareness. • Students were given an inventory test to assess and look for strengths and weaknesses in word patterns. • Word sorts will be sent home to reinforce patterns. • Students will receive a cumulative major writing grade. Fifteen of the words will come from the sort and five mystery words will follow the pattern.

10. Homework • Homework is the reinforcement of learning that occurs in the classroom. • Students will receive their homework folders on Friday afternoon and return them on the following Friday morning. Homework will be checked in class. • Homework consists of: Students reading for 15 minutes at least four times during the week. Sorting the spelling pattern for the week Completing a math worksheet and studying math facts

11. Attendance • Daily attendance is vital to student learning. It is important for your child to be at school on time. Due to a change from instructional days to instructional minutes, when your child leaves early, it counts against their attendance. • Students can enter the classroom at 8:10 in the morning. We will begin working on warm-ups at that time.

12. Classroom Behavior

13. Library • We will check out books as a class every Friday. There will be a daily open check out for students to visit the library as they need new books. Students are expected to take books home daily and return them daily for independent reading. Each student may check out two books; one on-level book and one of free choice.

14. Snacks and Lunch • Snack - We do not stop for a snack time; however, it is encouraged for students to bring a nutritious snack to eat while they work. I would like for students to bring only one dry snack a day. • Water bottles with pop-top style lids will be permitted in class. Water is the only drink permitted in the classroom. • Please use the parent tables when having lunch with your child.

15. Transportation • Transportation changes will require a written note or fax before 3:00 p.m. Phone calls and emails will not be accepted. If we do not have parent notification, your child will be sent home the way they normally go home. • Please do not put transportation notes in the Wednesday folder or homework folder.

17. Additional Information • Girls should wear shorts under skirts; no spaghetti straps for girls or sleeveless jerseys for boys • Birthday snacks--- store bought cookies or cupcakes can be handed out at the last 10 minutes of the lunch period • No toys/equipment brought from home for recess • Parent Conferences- Will begin soon • Fall Portraits- October 11th • Boo Bash—October 27 5pm-9pm • Report Card—October 24th • Run Wild At the Creek—Friday, March 8th
