Benchmark • A Point of known or given Elevation
Backsight • A rod Reading at a Benchmark
Foresight • A rod reading at a point of unknown elevation
Height of Instrument • The vertical distant from the ground to the level or laser. • Calculated by adding the rod reading at a Backsight to the Benchmark elevation Height of Instrument
Elevation • Vertical distance of a point from sea level. • Calculated by subtracting the rod reading at a foresight from the Height of Instrument
Turning Point • Occurs when the Surveyor’s Level is moved, thus requiring a new height of instrument to be calculated
Station • Point where rod readings are taken
Field Notes • Simple table to take accurate notation of rod readings. • Allows for simple calculations of elevation
