Background of the Internet • Early origin in 1960s • Closely tied to a networking project started by a governmental division called the Advanced Research Projects Agency. • Original name: ARPANET • Created so that scientists were able to share information on military and scientific research.
What is a browser? • The software program that you use to retrieve documents from the World Wide Web (WWW) and to display them in a readable format. • Examples: • Internet Explorer • Netscape Communicator • Mozilla Firefox
Research on the Internet • Two basic tools used to find information: • Search engines • Used to search for keywords • Google and search for Presidents • Subject directories • Used to find specialized topics • Go into list of internal directories then seach a specific term
What is a search engine? • A tool that lets you find Web pages that match a particular word or phrase. • Examples of search engines: • Google • Yahoo • Ask • Bing
Types of Search Engines • Multimedia Search Engines • Used to find graphics, video clips, animation, and MP3 music files. • Meta Search Engines • Search several major search engines at one time. • Individual Search Engine • Provides the highest volume of results – most broad • Putting in a key word
Phrase Searching • A phrase is entered using double quotation marks and only matches those that appear adjacent to each other and in the order in which you specify. • Example: “ baseball cards ”
Boolean Operators • Boolean logic consists of three logical operators: • AND • NOT • OR • Which would give you more results? • Yankees and baseball • Yankees or baseball
Extensions • An extension is a set of characters that follow a filename and are separated from it by a period, used to identify the kind of file: • Exe = executable files • install and run programs and routines • www.wordsofworth.exe • What do you think the extension in the web address www.cms.k12.nc.us is an example of? • Filename • Organization • Directory • Country
Chat Rooms • Using the computer to create real-time communication between yourself and another user or a group of users. • Internet Relay Chat (IRC) • One of the most widely used chat forums on the Internet today. • Known as instant messanger • Buddy lists • You specify your list of friends and even tell when they are online. • Example: AOL Messenger
Newsgroups • A discussion forum or a type of bulletin board. • Each board is dedicated to discussion on a particular topic.
Blogging • Blogging is similar to newsgroups • It is a way to share your thoughts, feelings and opinions with others through the internet • Can be public or private
Podcast • A way of publishing files to the internet and allowing users to subscribe and receive files automatically • Like a subscription • The US Olympics
What is Email? • Email, or electronic mail, is similar to regular mail. You have a message, an address, and a carrier that figures out how to get it from one location to another. • Email is used to stay in touch with family and friends, conduct business, and send attachments such as text and image files.
Advantages and Uses of Email • Faster way to communicate and respond • Quick and easy way to send messages • Forward messages to other individuals • Send messages to multiple individuals • Include attachments such as pictures, audio files, and documents
Email Terminology • Subject – the topic of the email • CC – Carbon Copy to send it to more than one person • BC – Blind Copy so you are able to send it to more than one person and the person in the BC spot is anonymous • Attachment – a way to attach/connect documents, pictures and videos to an email
To Stay Safe • Use only chat rooms and newsgroups that are moderated • Someone is making sure discussions stay on topic and people are following the rules • Make sure your websites are safe • There should be a lock at the bottom of the page • Or HTTPS in the address • If you get Emails from Bullies or people you do not know IGNORE the emails • Never write them back or post about the individual
