Criteria • Manners • Responsive to the rider’s aids • No bucking, kicking, rearing, biting etc • Minimal ear pinning, tail wringing, bit chewing • Consistency • Maintains proper frame, attitude and speed • Way of Going • True gaits: Walk – 4 beats, Jog – 2 beats, Lope – 3 beats • Cadenced and rhythmical • Soft footed, slow legged, flat kneed
Overall Picture: • Horse is looking through the bridle – not behind the vertical • A lot of drape to the reins • Maintains a low head carriage with the poll being level with the withers (can be slightly above or below) • Smooth transitions
Disqualifications • Breaking gait • Bucking, kicking, rearing • Picking up the wrong lead at the lope • The rider uses two hands on a shank bit
