A Little about Mrs. White • I graduated from Kennesaw State University in 1989 with a B.S. in Communications • This will be my 3rd year of teaching at Creekland Middle School • My life-long goal is to instill love and confidence in people so that they can realize their worth and importance in this world. • I have been married for 23 years. My husband is currently a teacher at Etowah High School. • I have 3 boys who have all gone through Creekland M.S. Andrew and Graham are attending CHVS, and Jesse is attending Southern Polytechnic University this fall. • We have 4 precious cats. One of whom is huge and loves to lie on his back.

  3. A little about Mrs. Brown • This is my 7th year teaching at CMS • I have my Masters in Middle Grades Literature • I have been married for 8 years. I have 1 daughter, MaryJo, who will be 4 at the end of the month and a new baby boy. • I have 1 dog, Skunk. • I love to read, scuba dive, and deer hunt. • . • My son, Bo, was just born this July and we are doing great. • I will be joining you later in the 1st quarter. • Ms. Dallas will be my long-term substitute until I return.

  4. Reading What can you expect in reading class this year?

  5. 8th Grade Course Map • Throughout the year • Focus on Informational and Literary Texts • Argumentative and Informational/Explanatory Writing • Using technology to be career and college ready • Routine writing: taking notes, summaries, journals, short responses • Active Reading Strategies • Vocabulary Development and Word Analysis • Speaking and Listening Skills • Test Taking Strategies • First and Third Quarters • Focus on Informational Texts and Argumentative Writing • Second and Fourth Quarters • Focus on Literary Texts and Informative/Explanatory Writing

What you will need: • 3 Subject Spiral notebook with pockets OR 1” 3 ring binder with pockets • Section 1: Warmups/Journal Entries • Section 2: Notes/Vocabulary • Section3: Daily Activities – comprehension questions, short responses, summaries, etc… *Literature Textbook *RC Book *Writing Utensils

  7. Homework • Read 30 minutes each weeknight or spread it out for a total of 120 minutes per week • Finish incomplete work or missed work • Study for tests and quizzes!!

Reading Counts Reading Counts Quarterly Goal • Meet your individual reading goals (1 fiction, 1 nonfiction, 1 of your choice each quarter) • Take RC tests on books • Increase your lexile score – Earn Rewards  no whining • Earn rewards for meeting goals • Earn a 100 on a Test grade each quarter! • No reading logs next quarter if met goal on previous one • Reading Logs • 2 hours (120 minutes) of reading each week • Due every Tuesday

  9. Millionaire Reader Book Club • Keep track of your reading in your agenda and on the wall chart. • Earn rewards! (every 6 books, highest class RC points party, and RC participation parties) • See page 23 in your agenda for the list of categories and rewards. We have a new Book Club List that gives you more freedom!

  12. To be successful: • Follow Classroom procedures • There is a right time and a right place for everything • Use your time wisely • Respect yourself (your attitude will make or break you) • Respect others Mrs. White is expected to follow these rules as well!! 

Procedures • Daily Lessons (posted on board) Warm-ups/Activating Activities Lesson Homework: weekly reading logs in agenda, p. • Turning in Work Class tray Late Work What to do when you’re absent • Reading Center Entering the Area – permission is required Checking out books • Reading Logs 2 hours of reading each week Due each Tuesday

Right Time and Right Place • Asking for things you need – pencils, erasers, paper, books, bandaids, etc… • Asking to go to locker or bathroom • Asking to go to office or nurse • Asking to go to Media Center • Blurting out in discussion or Raising your hand • Sharpening your pencil • Turning in work • It all boils down to respect and common sense!

Using our time wisely Use class time, literacy period, and homeroom to: • Work – giving your best • Ask questions • Seek help • Use the computer • Read your RC book • Take RC tests • Study for quizzes and tests Use transportation time, doctor’s offices, ball fields, and of course home to: • Read, finish homework, and study
