Ankle Injuries • Sprains occur 7x more than other ankle injuries. (Garrick JG, 1982) • ~25,000 ankle sprains occur per day in the U.S. (Kannus P, 1991) • Can result in disability • Pain • Inflammation • Loss of ROM • Residual Disability • ↑ $ for treatment • ↑ Return to play time http://www.ankleandfootnorthwest.com/ankle-sprain.html
Epidemiology: NCAA ISS • Ankle Ligament Sprains (Hootman, 2007) • 27, 117 Total • ~ 1,700 per year • 14.9% of all injuries • .83 rate per 1000 athlete-exposures
Preventing Ankle Ligament Injuries • Those with a history of ankle injury have increased risk of reoccurrence • Bracing is more cost effective than taping
Ankle Taping http://www.geocities.jp/yoshiatc/classroom/exsc158/ankle.html
Taping Studies • Limited literature on the effectiveness of taping or bracing in reducing ankle sprains • Studies look at the effects of taping on specific outcome variables (Cordova, 2002) • Sensorimotor • Range of motion • Functional testing
Types of Ankle Stabilizers • May Include: (Eils, 2002) • Soft • Semi-Rigid • Rigid
Soft Ankle Stabilizers http://www.justyhomecare.com/splint&Brace.html http://www.gobros.com/mcdavid/mcdavid-ankle-brace.php

Bracing Effectiveness • Studies have shown that bracing reduces the incidence of ankle sprains by 50-70% (McKeon, 2008) • Ankle stabilizers have also been shown to decrease the time needed to return to work/sport after an ankle injury (Kerkhoffs, 2002)
Rehabilitation vs. Bracing/Taping • Should be used conjunction (McKeon, 2008) • Use prophylactic braces and functional exercises (McKeon, 2008) • Studies show bracing is better in the early phases of ankle injury (Wilkerson, 2002)

Results 2010 2011 10 Ankle Injuries ATFL = 16.1% DELT = 6.5% AntTF = 9.7% * Of the 31 athletes 67% did not sustain an ankle injury • 25 Ankle Injuries • ATFL = 32.3% • DELT = 12.9% • AntTF = 12.9% • Talus, anterior capsule, posterior tibialis, and CF = 16.1% * Of the 31 athletes 19% did not sustain an ankle injury
Overall.. • There was a 48.4% decrease in ankle injuries from the 2010 to the 2011 season • Significantly less ankle injuries occurred in 2011 when compared to 2010 • t30=4.213, p<.001
