Fun Facts • The youngest signer was Edward Rutledge of SC. who was 26 years old. • The oldest signer was Benjamin Franklin of PA. who was 70 years old and who famously said, “We must all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”
Fun Facts • The Declaration of Independence didn’t actually create the United States of America upon being signed this actually came later. • In one of Thomas Jefferson’s rough drafts he condemned slavery but other signers argued for it to be removed before they signed. • One of the copies of the Declaration of Independence is on display in the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. • There are 26 copies of the Declaration of Independence
Fun Facts • John Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress at the time and was the only delegate to sign the Declaration on July 4th, 1776. • The other 55 signers didn’t sign it until later in August. • We celebrate Independence Day on July 4th because it was the day when the Declaration was Adopted by the Second Continental Congress
