Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research • Established 2001 to build BC’s health research capacity • Evolving mandate: apply research to health issues • MSFHR programs • Personnel Programs • Infrastructure Programs • Special Initiatives
Who is MITACS? • National research network connecting industry, academia and government • Headquartered at UBC • 10 regional offices across Canada • Canada’s leader in leveraging private sector investment for university research • Pioneered nationally-acclaimed MITACS-Accelerate program
Our Partnership • Internships delivered in partnership between MITACS and the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, a member of the HRIC • Working together to capitalize on our expertise and experience • Increases the scope and reach of the internship program • Increases potential for health-related innovation and knowledge transfer in BC’s economy
What is MITACS-Accelerate? • Supports industrial R&D through short-term research projects • Links university faculty and grad students/PDFs with BC companies • Low-risk way for companies to engage in research • The ultimate road-test of highly qualified future employees
How does it work? • Internships are funded 50/50 with both company and MITACS contributing $7,500 • $15K is provided to professor as a research grant • $10K given to student as stipend • $5K to cover research related costs associated with project • Company identifies research problem, intern prepares the application • Intern spends 50% of time on-site with company, with the remaining 50% at the host university • Internship periods range from 4 to 8 months
How does it work? • No application deadlines; proposals accepted year-round • International students are eligible • Quick turnaround time on reviews (< 6 weeks) • Proposals are peer-reviewed at arms length **A pre-approved internship proposal can be used to attract potential grad students & PDFs**
How MITACS-Accelerate works identify research opportunities access research expertise collaborative research BC INDUSTRY BC UNIVERSITY
Program Advantages for Industry • Research projects are company driven • Leverages existing R&D budgets • HR recruitment tool; connecting with potential employees • Facilitates new relationships with university-based researchers • No application deadlines; proposals accepted any time
And for students… • Opportunity to apply graduate research to real-world industry challenges • Enhance future employment opportunities • Develop valuable, professional relationships with industry and other non-academic organizations
Non-Viral Gene Delivery to Gut Stem Cells • Working to deliver a weight loss protein that will combat obesity. If successful, the team expects to see this protein in the blood of specimens, encouraging less eating and weight loss. • enGene, a biotech company specializing in DNA delivery to the gut, will provide the training necessary for this project. Computational/Experimental Protocol for Development of a Therapeutic Agent for Treatment of Tuberculosis • With the emergence of drug resistant tuberculosis, the World Health Organization has declared tuberculosis a global health emergency. • By combining computational models with experimental data, critical binding interactions of the natural substrates and inhibitors can be observed. The information will be used in the design of novel drugs effective against drug resistant tuberculosis strains. MITACS Acceleratein theLife Sciences
Monitoring Sleep-related Breathing Irregularities with Computer Vision • Sleep monitoring plays an essential role in the diagnosis of sleep disturbances. This project works to develop new computer vision-based methods for home-based sleep monitoring in partnership with Vigil Health Solutions. • The project targets automatic detection and measurement of sleep apnea, bidirectional transitions from profound to shallow breathing, whole body motion occurring during sleep and other sleep quality indicators.
