Definition of Terms • Physical Activity (PA)-Any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscle resulting in energy expenditure. • Baseline PA :light-intensity activities of daily life • Health-enhancing PA is activity that, when added to baseline activity, produces health benefits.
Definition of Terms • Muscle-strengthening PA Activities that promote muscular strength such as playing on playground equipment or climbing trees. • Bone-strengthening PA Activities that produce a force on the bones that promotes bone growth/strength such as running, jumping rope, basketball and tennis.
HHS 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines Children and Adolescents (aged 6-17) Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity (PA) daily. Aerobic PA: Intensity- moderate (most days) and vigorous (3 days/week) • Include muscle strengthening activities such as gymnastics or pushups at least 3 days per week as part of the 60 minutes. • Include bone strengthening activities, such as jump rope or running at least 3 days per week as part of the 60 minutes.
Intensity of PA Defined • Intensity refers to how much work or effort is required to perform the activity • MET (Metabolic Equivalent)-Measure of PA Intensity • 1 MET= Energy expenditure during sitting rest • 1 MET =1kcal/kg/hr • 1.1-2.9 METs= light activity • 3.0-5.9 METs= moderate activity • > 6.0 METs= vigorous activity
What are Moderate Intensity Physical Activities? • 3- 5.9 METs (or 3-5.9 X resting) • 5 or 6 on a scale of 0 to 10 • HR of 65%-75% of heart rate max • Activities considered moderate intensity • Biking • Walking briskly • Pushing a lawn mower • Hiking • Rollerblading
What are Vigorous Intensity Physical Activities • > 6 METs (> 6 X Rest) • 7 or 8 on a scale of 0 to 10 • HR of > 75% of heart rate max • Activities considered vigorous intensity • Basketball • Jumping rope • Jogging or running • Riding a bike on hills or riding faster 10mph • Swimming fast
Meeting goal of 2 hours of PA preschoolers (3-5 years old) Activity Time Vigorous Muscle Bone Walk 20 minutes Active Games 20 minutes (hop, skip, jump) Play ground / Free play 60 minutes (climb, hang, run) Gymnastics 20 minutes Total Time120 minutes
Example Of Meeting Daily PA Guidelines (Child) Activity Time Vigorous Muscle Bone Walks briskly to/from school 20 minutes Plays actively with family 20 minutes Jumps rope 10 minutes Gymnastics 10 minutes Total Time60 minutes
Example Of Meeting Daily PA Guidelines (Adolescent) Activity Time Vigorous Muscle Bone Walks dog 10 minutes Basketball game 30 minutes Does set-ups/push-ups 5 minutes Walks briskly with friend 15 minutes Total Time60 minutes
Health Benefits For Meeting the Minimum PA Guidelines • Strong Evidence • Improved endurance and muscular fitness • Favorable body composition • Improved cardiovascular and metabolic health biomarkers • Improved bone health • Moderate Evidence • Reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression
