Properties of Earth • Spherical Shape- A round, three-dimensional object • Axis- the imaginary vertical line around which Earth spins. It cuts directly through the center of the Earth. The poles are located at the north and south ends of Earth’s axis. • Rotation- the spinning of Earth on its axis.
Properties of Earth • Demonstrate night and day • As earth rotates, you can see the Sun come into view at daybreak. During night, your area of Earth has rotated so that it is on the opposite ide s the Sun. So the Sun is no longer seen by you. Earth continues to rotate and eventually the Sun comes into view again the next morning. One complete rotation takes about 24 hours, or one day.
Properties of Earth • Check point- How many rotations does Earth complete during one year? Solstices- the day when the Sun reaches its greatest distance north or south of the equator. In the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice occurs on June 21 and the winter solstice Dec. 21.
Equinoxes- when the sun is directly above Earth’s eqautor. Because of the tilt of Earth’s axis, the Sun’s position relative to the equator changes constantly. During equinox the number of daylight hours and night-time hours is nearly equal all over the world and neither the northern nor the southern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun.
In the northern humisphere, the Sun reaches the spring equinox March 21 and fall equinox Setember 22. Southern hemisphere, equinoxes September and fall March.
