3. Big Decision • Young people will spend more time in work than before; the next 40 years at least. • They will need to use all the tools at their disposal to help them make their big decisions. • They should consider learning styles, financial aspects and further opportunities of all options.

4. Making The Decision What is the earning potential of my chosen career? How much will I need to pay for the lifestyle I want? Money What am I good at? What skills could I / do I need to develop? Enjoyment Skills What do I love doing? Can I make a career out of it?

Apprenticeships - What Are They? • Three levels - Intermediate, Advanced, Higher / Degree • Minimum wage of £3.30p/h, but up to £20k+ p/a • Typically spend 4 days per week in work and study for 1 – a practical style of learning • Last 12 months – 6 years • A Level / BTEC entry requirements and achieve recognised qualification • Increasing amount of roles available, giving access to “big” companies • Timing is key – students can apply for an unlimited number

An Example… • KPMG 360° Rotational Apprenticeship Programmefor school and college leavers. • It consists of three levels: • Foundation Level In the first 12 months you’ll learn what our different business areas (Audit, Tax and Advisory) do, how they do it and why. • Technician LevelIn your second and third years you’ll spend more time in Audit, Tax and Advisory to develop a deeper understanding of our business. As you’ll learn, you’ll also study for a Technician Level qualification. • Professional LevelChoose to continue and you’ll spend the next three years specialising in Audit, Tax or Advisory. Along with on-the-job training, you’ll study for a professional qualification, e.g. ACA, CA, CTA, or CIMA. • 104 UCAS Points • A starting salary of £15,600-£18,000 (depending on office location) with incremental pay rises throughout the programme. 13. What is HE? Higher Education • Studying at degree level, usually at a university • Some colleges offer HE courses (e.g. Wakefield, Kirklees College) • Typically 3 year courses for traditional degrees • Medicine/Dentistry is typically 5 years • Some courses offer work placement years (sandwich courses) or opportunities to study abroad

14. Why study at university? • HE enhances life chances • Lower unemployment rates amongst graduates • Wider choice of roles in the workplace • Graduates earn on average £12k more per year than non-graduates. • Independence, life skills and social skills • Professional and social networking

Financial Implications • Students will attend a Student Finance assembly after Christmas • All students are entitled to a tuition fee loan from the government that covers the cost of their course – paid back later & not means tested • Most students are entitled to a maintenance loan (living costs) which is paid into their account – can be means tested & paid back

Financial Implications • Students don’t begin to pay loans off until they are earning over £25,725k • Monthly repayments are usually 9% of salary over £25k (e.g. if earning £29K, only 9% of £3,275k is repaid per year) • Repayment deducted before wage goes into account The debt is in the student’s name, not yours! • Students who meet special criteria may be eligible to receive bursaries or scholarships from universities • Student need to look for these themselves on university websites and Unifrog • They’re not always advertised!

17. UCAS

18. What is UCAS? Universities and Colleges Admissions Service • Online system for applying for over 50,000 courses at over 370 Higher Education (HE) institutions • Only way to apply for HE • Brings together student applications, references and is submitted via UCAS to University Admissions tutors • The most recent cycle (Apply 2019) has seen approx. 453,000 applications by Jan 2019

19. What does it cost? • Registration and completion of an application is FREE • To send a completed application to UCAS it costs £20 to apply for one course or £25 for up to 5 courses • Students on bursary will need to make the initial payment, but the cost will be refunded • Payment by debit/credit card only (payment is only taken when student submits the application and is non -refundable)

How is an application made? • ALL Students and staff attend the UCAS Convention at Leeds Beckett University on 19thJune • Applications will be started on the Future Progression Days 17th& 18thJune • Online application form • Monitored online and quality checked by form tutors and 2 members of College Team • References are provided by subject specialists and form tutors.

What happens once the application has been sent to UCAS? • Students can monitor their application status online via UCAS • Students will receive email regular updates from UCAS and their university choices – encourage them to check emails regularly • When a student has received offers from, or been declined by, all chosen institutions they must make a firm and insurance choice • Students rejected by all their chosen institutions can apply to further institutions through UCAS Extra or Clearing.

22. Results Day 2020 and Beyond • Applicants may have received confirmation that they have attained their place via a letter, email or text from a University • Students who achieve grades higher than their firm choice can apply to upgrade their course/institution via UCAS Adjustment • Students who fail to meet their firm and insurance offers and are declined a place can still find HE places through UCAS Clearing

What Next? • 17th& 18thJune – Future Progression HE days (half of year group on each day, other half completing Life Skills sessions – compulsory attendance to both days) • 19thJune – UCAS Convention at Leeds Beckett University (compulsory attendance) • 15thOctober – UCAS deadline for Medicine / Dentistry / Veterinary / Oxbridge applications • 15th January – final UCAS deadline for all applications *NOTE – this is an official UCAS deadline and cannot be extended*

Unifrog is a platform to support students to progress into the best opportunity for them. • Unifrog do this by providing a one-stop-shop where students can explore their interests, then find and successfully apply for their best next-step after school /College.

UK Universities • Students can enter subject of interest and projected grades to see all relevant university courses available in the UK • Rank and filter opportunities by factors like distance from home, price of accommodation and graduate job rates • Get direct links to university information pages, with impartial information on courses and institutions • Save unlimited shortlists to refer back to later

Apprenticeships • Students can find live apprenticeship vacancies • Vacancies are updated daily • Rank and filter opportunities by factors like distance from home, weekly wage and application deadlines • Direct link to the ‘apply’ page • Each apprenticeship vacancy includes practical information about the opportunity, employer and training • Save unlimited shortlists to refer back to later

32. Special Opportunities • Includes £5 million-worth of grants, bursaries, scholarships, contextual offers and extracurricular activities e.g. summer schools • These can be filtered by circumstances or characteristics, depending on the access requirements of the opportunity • Includes direct links for applying • Unlimited shortlists can be created and referred back to.

33. Other Useful Tools… The Unifrog platform contains so much more than what we can show you today. Students have already started creating CVs, recording their activities and evidencing their skill sets using Unifrog. So why not see for yourself? Sign up as a student and access the tools in exactly the same way that the students do. You never know, there might be a new career just around the corner!

Parents & Guardians Task • Go to the Careers Library and favourite at least one career profile that you think will be useful for your son or daughter • Go to the Know How Library and find at least one guide that you would like to share with your son or daughter • Create an apprenticeship or university shortlist
