Menu MVS ENGINEERING Information on Helium December 21, 2018 CHEMICAL PROPERTIES CHEMICAL PROPERTIES 1. Helium is a chemical element with the symbol ‘He’ and atomic number 2. 2. After hydrogen (symbol- H), He falls second in the list of a most common element. Helium makes up around 24% of its mass. 3. It is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas. 4. This gas is a part of a group of chemical elements called noble gases. This group includes argon, radon, xenon, neon, and krypton. All these gases have similar properties under normal conditions. Also, these gases less likely participate in chemical reactions because their outer shell of electrons is full. 5. In the list of least reactive elements, neon is first and helium is second in the list. 6. Though helium is 7% less buoyant than hydrogen, it still has a lesser risk of fire as compared with hydrogen. 7. Helium has a lifting force of one gram per liter. For example, if there is a balloon that stores 20 liters of helium in it, it can lift an object that weighs 20 grams. 8. As helium is lighter than air, it is used to fill blimps, balloons, and airships. Its property of not burning or reacting with other chemicals proves it safer to be used for this purpose. Others Others 1. As helium is less dense than normal air, it changes the sound of a person’s voice if it is inhaled from a helium balloon. However, the breathing of too much helium should not be done as it can choke people due to lack of oxygen. 2. Metals for superconductivity use are cooled down using liquid helium. 3. A European organization uses liquid helium to maintain an extremely low temperature for their nuclear research. 4. Helium is also used in fuel management in space programs.
5. Near a temperature of absolute zero, helium can be found in liquid as well as solid state.
