  4. Importance of Safety • 8,900 workers injured on the job in BC every year in BC • $12 million in pay out every year • Not including hiring replacement workers, overtime and retraining

  5. Types of Hotel Accidents • 27% Overexertion • 24% Falls and spills • 16% Struck by object • 14% Hitting an object & twisting motions • 4% Burns • 3% voilence • (WCB Report 1998)

  6. Why Focus on Hospitality? • Injuries mean lost money, lost time, lost productivity … pain and suffering for employees • Attitude in the industry that accidents are inevitable • Rates pf injury are higher in young people … make up the majority of workforce

  7. Why Focus on Hospitality? • Rates of injury are higher among New workers … industry has high turnover and large numbers of low skilled workers

  8. Work safer by • Redesign of workplace or work processes • Early orientation & training • Extra observation of workers by all supervisors and co-workers • Know and comply with saftey requirements • Assess and eliminate potential for injury
