  2. Improving Health Care • the US spends an estimated $2 trillion annually on healthcare expenses • In 2006 well over $30 billion spent by Americans in avoidable hospitalizations such as unnecessary hospital admissions

Heritage Provider Network (HPN) Heritage Health Prize • Offering a prize for being able to predict the number of days a patient will stay in a hospital in the next year. • They will use the winning algorithm to improve healthcare. • Some of the data provided includes patient numbers, condition, and days in hospital.

Heritage Health Prize • Improve Healthcare • Identify patients who will be admitted to a hospital within the next year, using historical claims data. • Can we identify earlier those most at risk and ensure they get the treatment they need? Main Question: Predict the number of days a patient will spend in a hospital in the next year.

  5. Possible Topics • Using HPN’s data to predict future events • Days of stay in hospital • Trends within conditions • How often a condition takes place • Identifying which conditions are most as risk

  6. Our Questions • We are going to try and use graphs to show the trends of days admitted into the hospital. What other graphs could we create and analyze? • How to choose what reason we should focus on for admission?

  7. Additional Questions • How would findings improve health care in the US? • Can we identify those conditions/people most at risk? • Are there patterns or increases in different conditions? • What else could we use the data to find?
