  2. A discussion activity: With the people sitting near you, decide….What are 3 things that the tutor should do at the beginning of the tutoring session?

  3. What does a tutor do? Look at the following list. What are the top 3 roles that you believe a tutor should fill? Explain your choices to your group….

  4. TUTOR ROLES • Appropriator • Collaborator • Controller • Editor • Listener • Manager • Modeler • Negotiator • Questioner • Reader/Responder • Resource person

  5. A role-play: Grab the person sitting next to you as a partner. One of you is the TUTOR. The other person is the TUTEE. OK?

  6. Next…. Imagine that the TUTEE has just given the TUTOR the following text. What will you (the TUTOR) say first? Next? What questions or comments might the TUTEE make? Role-play the tutoring session for a couple of minutes.

  7. THE TEXT Traditional Japanese food style has been made by wisdom of ancestors and cultural Japanese foods have come from the Chinese continent in ancient times (Dictionary, 2008). That means Japanese food has influences from both China and Korea in the last 300 – 400 years. Add this culture, it is characteristic that foods reflect the climate. Therefore, Japanese food has deeply connected with seasons, especially foods which have ingredients that are available for only one season for a whole year. Such seasonal foods are called shun. Now techniques have been really progress for cook as shun foods so we could enjoy seasonal foods in every season (Dictionary for Japanese Culture, 2008).

You can do it! • Be a volunteer ESL or IECP Tutor in the SPRING • You can choose how many hours you want to work • Tutees will fit into YOUR schedule • You do not have to be a native speaker to be a great tutor! Help ESL students with • Writing • Reading • Organizing • Study skills • Pragmatics • Grammar • Individual questions
