  2. Quick or Ceremonial Kick? Opponents MUST retire 10 yards from the ball at the taking of a free kick

  3. Quick Free Kick • Ball must be properly placed • Ball must be stationary • Kicking team has the option of taking kick quickly • No whistle is required “You take a quick kick, you take your chances.”

  4. Quick Free Kick - Risks Defender moving closer than 10 yards to ball interferes with kick • Stop play, caution, retake the kick Any other circumstance, play continues. Examples: • Ball kicked directly to opponent • Ball kicked and opponent moves sideways to intercept • Opponent moves closer to ball but does not interfere

  5. Ceremonial Free Kick • Ceremonial kick is appropriate • Caution or send off • Treatment of injury on the field • Request from kicking team • Needed for game management • Referee must clearly indicate “whistle” • Play must be restarted with a whistle

  6. Ceremonial Kick 10 yards please!

  7. Encroachment • Failure to respect required distance • Cautionable offense Use common sense in managing

  8. Exceptions Free kick to team within their own goalarea – Similar to goal kick Ball is placed anywhere in goal area Opponents must be outside of penalty area Ball is in play when it leaves the penalty area

  9. Exceptions Free kick to team within their own penalty area – Similar to goal kick Ball is placed at location of foul Opponents must be outside of penalty area Ball is in play when it leaves the penalty area

  10. Exceptions IFK to attacking team in opponent’s goal area Ball is moved out to 6 yard line

  12. Double Touch Rule • Indirect free kick to opposing team • Kicker touches ball again before it touches another player • Kick at location of 2nd touch

  13. Infringements • Free kick inside team’s own penalty area • If defender makes contact • Retake the free kick • If attacker makes contact • Caution the player • Retake free kick

  14. Review Question What action should the referee take if an opponent fails to respect the required distance by lunging toward and blocking a free kick? • The player should be cautioned and the kick should be retaken • Play should continue and the player should be cautioned at the next stoppage
