Free Kicks Officiating Mechanics
Stoppage of Play • Team being fouled has rights. • Quick Kick • Distance (with one exception) • Team taking quick kick, hits a nearby defender, play on. • Use your voice, “back off”
Defenders • What to do if: • Defender picks up ball • Defender retreats 3-4 meters • Defender moves within required distance before kick is taken. • Defenders in wall raise their arms.
Hints To Assist • If issuing caution or ejection, kick may only begin with a whistle. • Kick is to be taken from spot of foul. (one exception) • Ask lead AR to go to space where wall should be. • You should know what ten yards are. • If attacker paces off yards, caution them.
Preventative Officiating • Use your voice. • Use your personality. • Use your whistle. • Extra effort to get to point of the foul. • Praise sporting behavior, (helping a player up). • Watch for taunting, (if defender perceives there was a flop).
Summarize • Action on the field, by the referee, allows free kicks to flourish. • Referee responsibilities are not to let the team that fouled win the moment. • AR responsibilities are to assist the referee with distance and bench control, if available. • Delaying the restart of play, is a caution. • A referee team that controls the game do not allow players to control the game.
