Chapter 17 Anabolic metabolism
Gluconeogenesis • Starting off on p208 this time • During short periods of fasting, the body uses stored glycogen to get it’s needed glucose • During long periods (such as sleeping) the body utilises gluconeogenesis • Gluconeogenesis forms glucose from a number of substrates: • Amino acids from muscle protein • Lactate from muscle tissue • Glycerol from triaglycerol in adipose (fatty) tissue
Comparing • Gluconeogenesis is basically the same as glycolysis but in reverse. It can shift in reverse due to some unique enzymes to the process. Look at fig 17.7 p212 (you don’t need to learn the names of enzymes – just note that there are different ones involved) • The different substrates feed into Gluconeogenesis differently, read about this on p210 • All this is controlled hormonally – when insulin is high and glucagon is low, glycolysis ensues – when glucagon is high and insulin is low, gluconeogenesis ensues
SYMPOSIUM – oh yeah!!! • This is going to be one that requires group and personal effort. • Each group will research one of three anabolic processes: • Amino acid (nucleotide) • Glycogen • Lipid • You will need to organise yourselves and provide at least one ‘slide’ with the main points. You will create the slide and then present to the other group. I will post your summary slides onto Engage Online for sharing.Oooooh, we are adding technology this time! • You should spend at least an hour preparing. Utilise the library and any other resources you have.
