CRIS and European e-Infrastructure A (not only) Researcher‘s View euroCRIS Strategic SeminarSeptember 17-18, 2007, Brussels Dr. Maximilian StempfhuberGESIS-IZ Social Science Information CentreBonn, Germany
Personal Background • GESIS German Social Science Infrastructure Services • Computer and information scientist • Developing information systems for the social sciences • Managing ICT projects • Network activities • IuK Initiative Wissenschaft • euroCRIS • DINI
Outline • Different perspectives to CRIS and e-Infrastructures • Perspectives meet reality • Challenges for information infrastructures • Scope & audience • Content • Integration • Dissemination • Incentives • Conclusion
A Librarian’s Perspective Missing: Research institutes, Projects, Persons, Facilities, … Where is the CRIS? (Adapted from Kent&Lancour 1979)
Data Data Discovery Data Repurposing Research Outcomes Study Concept & Design Data Collection Data Processing Data Access & Dissemination Analysis KT Cycle A Data Archive’s Perspective Missing: Literature, Research institutes, Projects, Persons, Facilities, … Where is the CRIS? Humphrey 2006
An e-Science Perspective Missing: Research institutes, Projects, Persons, Facilities, … Where is the CRIS? Lyon 2003
Some Commonalities Creates new Environment Relies on Cooperation Structural View Where is the CRIS? Promotes Standards Requires Change Service Provider’s Perspective (mostly)
Perspective Meets Reality • “Chaotic” systems (Google etc.) are used very frequently • Current models work (only) for small communities & data • Researchers don’t like to • Fill out forms • Enter information twice • Be distracted from research • Be evaluated • …
Perspective Meets Reality (cont.) • Researchers want • Access to all relevant information at one place(scope, quality & completeness!) • Simplicity with non-research-related tasks • Up-to-date information • To be recognized • … What is a CRIS?
What’s the challenge? Scope & Audience • Personal, institutional, national, …domain-specific, interdisc., current? • Are CRIS and e-Infrastructures (really) targeted at all researchers? • How generic can they be, howdomain-specific do they have to be to be useful? • Do they want to be a/the primary source for information?
What’s the challenge? (cont.) Content • Persons, organizations, projects vs. literature, data, communication, … • Documenting own activities vs.information about state-of-the art • Ensuring quality and timeliness vs.producing additional workload • Promoting results vs.avoiding total transparency
What’s the challenge? (cont.) Integration • Heterogeneous information • Re-use of information betweenprocesses and systems • Consistency • Building aggregations suitablefor different user groups
What’s the challenge? (cont.) Dissemination • Funding agencies require dissemination beyond research publications (e.g. policy briefs) • Do CRISs and e-Infrastructures support dissemination to stakeholders?
What’s the challenge? (cont.) Incentives • What are the benefits in providing and maintaining information? • How can researches be motivated to share information? • What new services can be provided by e-Infrastructures? • Any other way than pressure to make researchers participate?
Conclusion • The integration of CRIS, digital libraries, e-Infrastructure etc. is not yet there (on a large scale). • Currently, incentives from CRIS etc. not visible to every researcher. • A solution might be to integrate management / documentation of and information about research:place of input = place of output • Many things are domain-specific!
