OurMentors Olympians… • Strives for excellence • Hard working • Motivated • Committed
Aim of the project To provide support, information and supervision to those sign off mentors who were supporting final placement students To ensure continued public protection
Methodology • Stakeholder engagement • Development of a model of support • Selection process • Pilot implementation
Evaluation (Kirkpatrick, 2006)Level 1 - Reaction to model of support • Sign off Mentors • Heads of Service/Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses • Approved Educational Institution Colleagues • Practice Education Team
Level 2 - Learning from the model of support What our sign off mentors told us…. Shared learning and problem solving with other mentors Recognised my own level of knowledge Greater insight into my own responsibilities These sessions helped me be better prepared for the student
Level 3 - How has the model of support changed behaviours • Willingness to share learning • Increased awareness of the role of the sign off mentor • Earlier identification of student support issues • Increased engagement with sign off mentors • Increased and continued support from key stakeholders
Level 4 - Results • Increased recognition and focus on the mentor role • Increased number of supervisions • Increased evidence of issues in relation to student performance being identified • Increased awareness of the infrastructure to support the standards Patient safety - Protection of the public
Recommendations • Model of support for sign off mentors is being extended to include all fields of nursing • Development of support for mentors • Review and adapt the model to meet service need • Continued robust evaluation
