Dreams, Prophesy and God’s Word • Our life must be lived by the Word as final authority • God given dreams, visions and prophesy should always align with the written Word of God. • Jesus is the Word Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. • Acts 18 v 11 – The Berean Test – Search the Scriptures to see if what they had heard was true • Important to school ourselves in the Word - First the milk of the Word (1 Pe 2:2) Don’t try and tackle the Prophetic teachings of Revelation if your on milk • Once you can digest the milk move onto meat – Heb 5:14 – But Solid food belongs to those who are full of age that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil – Know if a prophesy or dream is from God – Hear the still small voice

  4. False Prophets • [Jer 23:25-27]... I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in My name, saying, “I have dreamed I have dreamed!” How long will this be in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies? Indeed they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart, who try to make My people forget My name by their dreams which everyone tells his neighbour, as their fathers forgot My name for Baal. • Purpose detract focus from God.

  5. False Prophets v True Prophets • A thorn in the side of the true prophets of God were the number of false prophets challenging them. We see this from Moses onwards • 2 Chron 18: 1-27 – Micaiah the Lone Voice of God • 2 Tim 4:3 For there will come a time when they will not endue sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears they will heap up for themselves teachers • Most prophetic utterances in the New Testament were words of warning not blessing or guarantees of blessing – (Acts 11:28, 21:10-11) • God in his Word has promised to bless and prosper you

  6. Who’s Prophetic word To Trust? Any word from a second party should confirm what is already in your heart from God. This is why the giving of prophesy is to be weighed up – 1 Cor14:29 – Prophetic word used as confirmation • Spiritual Leaders - 1 Thes 5:12 And we urge you brethren, to recognise those who labour among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish (warn) you • The Fruit - By their Fruit you shall know them (Mat 7:16 – False Prophets = Bad Fruit) Jezebel (Manipulates and Seduces) and Balaam (Cash) • In your relationship with God - You bear witness to the word or dream – you have a peace from God

I Had a God Given Dream I think Why does God speak to us through dreams? • Maybe the only Time He has your undivided attention • When you are asleep your conscious mind cannot fight God’s message. • Often when we are awake, our conscious mind gets in the way of hearing from God, but when we are asleep God is able to communicate in a way that we cannot contest. • When you’re asleep you’re vulnerable. You lose control of your life, and God has it. This is when God can really speak to you.

  8. What Does God use Dreams for? 1. Warn of sin. God is concerned about our lifestyle. Abimelech was admonished in a dream about committing adultery with Abraham’s wife, Sarah. • But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.” (Genesis 20:3) • Through this dream, Abimelechrepented.

  9. What Does God use Dreams for? 2. Guidance. God will also guide you through dreams. He did it for Joseph (Matthew 2) and for Pilate’s wife (Matthew 27:19). • Joseph, husband of Mary: he had a dream from God when he was only seventeen years old (Genesis 17:2).

  10. What Does God use Dreams for? 3. Encouragement. Sometimes God gives you a dream to simply encourage you. For example, when Gideon needed reassurance to fight the Midianites he was inspired through a dream and its interpretation. • Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.” • His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.” • When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he worshipped God. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The LORD has given the Midianite camp into your hands.” Judges 7:13-15

  11. What Does God use Dreams for? 4. Protection and Provision • Daniel was young when God gave him a dream and the interpretation in order to protect everyone from Nebuchadnezzar’s wrath (Daniel 2:19). • Solomon, a young king. He had dreamt that God gave him wisdom. He called himself “a little child” (1 Kings 3:7) when he had the dream.

  12. What Does God use Dreams for? 5. Information • Prophecy about future events, or information about current circumstances. Example: Joseph’s dream about having his family bowing to him predicted an elevated future status.

  13. What Does God use Dreams for? • In each of these cases, the dreamer knew exactly what the dream meant. If God sends a dream, he makes his meaning clear. If a dream is not clear to you, it may not be from God. It may be just a natural dream. If we believe the dream has symbolic means within it like Joseph’s we should ensure sound Christian sources are used to interpret.

  14. Was it Wasn’t It? Why would the Devil want to interfere with your dreams? • Rob you of sleep • Steer you off course with God • Cause you to fear Ps 127:2 – God gives His beloved sleep

  15. Not Every Dream is of God • The majority of our dreams will be natural dreams. This is our mind, which God gave us, working through, and processing issues in our lives. • The conclusions our minds come to can be correct, or incorrect, so we have to reflect on what they tell us. • There are many causes of dreams including worry. “…a dream comes when there are many cares…”(Eccl 5:3). • Satan can give counterfeit dreams, especially when the dreamer is involved in occult activities.

  16. Not Every Dream is of God • The lust of the flesh can causes dreams. • Bitterness can cause dreams whereby you hurt people. • Fear can cause you to have nightmares. Many dreams are confused mixes of concerns or events that the mind is still working on. Just reflect on them, and do not worry about them. Ask God to expose the root cause, act and pray Pr 3:24 And when you lie down you will not be afraid: Yes you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet • There is also “wishful thinking” interpretations. This is when we take a dream that is natural, or carnal in nature, and believe/claim God said something. • We must use the discernment. The Holy Spirit will provide this, so we do not go in the way of error. • We must Seek God with an open mind.

  17. What to do Weigh up a dream or prophetic word by: • Pray with an open minded before you act to receive the peace of God to progress (Phil 4: 6-7) • The reputation of the prophet or dreamer – By there fruit you shall know them (Mat 7:20) – See them from Heavens perspective – Jezebel (Rev 2:20) Do they call themselves a prophet – Does the fruit back up the claim? Is it a person God would use to speak to you? • The character of God – Is it something God would say? • Your character - Is it you or how God would speak to you or what He would speak to you about? • Is it inline with other ‘trusted’ prophetic words • The Word of God (Start and Finish) – God will never call you to live, act or speak contrary to the Written Word
