  2. Genetic cause of disease • This disease is caused by the programmed degeneration of nerve cells in the brain • This process causes uncontrolled movements, loss of intellectual faculties and emotional disturbance • This disease is a dominant disorder

Symptoms of Huntington's • Individuals will experience mood swings and uncharacteristic attitudes and feelings • Individuals judgment, memory, and cognitive functions will be affected • Individuals will experience uncontrolled movements • The disease can reach the point where speech is slurred and vital functions, such as swallowing, eating, speaking, and especially walking, continue to decline

  4. Age group affected • The most common age that this disease occurs is the middle age for people affected(30-50) • Juvenile HD is when someone develops the disease before they are 20 • Another very rare age affected is people over 55 and when they are affected the disease is very difficult

  5. Characteristics of hd • It is a single gene disorder caused by a malfunctioning on chromosome 4 • HD is usually inherited by a child from their father • Classified by the lose of nerve cells in the brain • The mutation causing the disease is a pathogenic trinucleotide repeat expansion

Treatment • Doctors may prescribe any of the following • Tetrabenazineto treat Huntington's chorea • Haloperidol, or clonazepam, to alleviate choreic movements and help control hallucinations, delusions, and violent outbursts • For depression, fluoxetine, sertraline, nortriptyline, or other compounds • Tranquilizers can help control anxiety and lithium may be prescribed to combat pathological excitement and severe mood swings • Side effects may include fatigue, restlessness, or hyperexcitability

  7. Life expectancy • The average life expectancy of someone after they have been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease is about 15 years.

Interesting Facts • The disease is named after George Huntington who was one of the first people to have the disease • Over 15,000 people in America have Huntington’s Disease • The actual cause of death in many cases of people that have HD is secondary diseases such as pneumonia • There is no cure for Huntington’s disease
