  1. War in Algeria By: Miki and Anna

  2. How it Began • In May 1945, French colonial police fired shots at a peaceful demonstration. • The demonstration was in support of Algerian and Arab nationalism. • This caused Algerian riots to break out. • In between the demonstration and the start of the war, 8,000 Algerian Muslims died.

  3. The Beginning of the War • The war began in 1954 under the National Liberation Front (or FLN). • Based in the mountainous areas and used guerrilla warfare. • At this time, the French government did not realize the seriousness of the situation.

  4. The War • At first the FLN’s policy was to attack military and government targets. • But in 1955, the FLN began attacking urban areas; specifically the attack on the town Constantine. Many French were killed. • In August 1955 there was a massacre in the town Phillippeville; the FLN killed 123 people. • This shocked the French government. • In retaliation, they killed 12,000 Muslims. • This led to all out war.

  5. The War • The French sent 400,000 troops to Algeria. • Algerians were fighting Algerians because 170,000 French troops were Algerian Muslims. • Algerians serving the French had to kill Algerians or be killed by them. • Many Algerian civilians were killed for suspicion of aiding FLN guerillas.

  6. The War’s End • On March 19, 1962, the French declared a ceasefire. • In July 1, 1962, Algeria held a vote on its independence. • Algeria voted to be independent from France after an almost unanimous vote. • On July 3rd, Algeria was officially declared independent.

  7. Destruction of the War • After 8 years of revolution, many lives were lost. • Algeria says 1.5 million died, and France says 350,000 died. • 2 million Algerians were uprooted and fled to Morocco and Tunisia.
