SCRIPT Intro: At Manassas, I have been flying a 172-M. This quick video will explain the engine of "my" aircraft. Power plant: The 172M model. This model was manufactured from 1972 to 1976 and continued the engine design introduced with the I-model in 1968, namely the Lycoming O-320-E2D engine with 150 hp. The Lycoming O-320 is a large family of 92 different normally aspirated, air-cooled, four-cylinder, direct-drive engines commonly used on light aircraft. As implied by the engine's name, its cylinders are arranged in horizontally opposed configuration and a displacement of 320 cubic inches (5.24 L). The O-320 has two overhead valves per cylinder, an Updraft carburetor and a wget sump oil system. The engine is air-cooled and runs on 80/87 avgas. Performance: Power output: 150 hp (112 kW), Compression ratio: 7:1, Power-to-weight ratio: 1.63 lb/hp (0.99 kW/kg) Result: With this engine, the 172-M has an optimal cruise from 131 mph (211 km/h) TAS. And a sea level rate of climb at 645 ft (197 m) per minute.
